Islanders Next Two Opponents, Carolina & Colorado, Make Blockbuster Trade

The New York Islanders' next two opponents, the Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche, have shaken up the league.

During the Islanders' Friday night contest against Philadelphia, Carolina acquired superstar winger Mikko Rantanen from Colorado and center Taylor Hall from Chicago in a three-way deal.

Colorado received star winger Martin Necas, center Jack Drury, a second-round pick, and a fourth-round pick in return for Rantanen. To balance the salary cap, Carolina also sent a third-round pick to Chicago in exchange for the Blackhawks retaining 50% on Rantanen's deal.

Some of the details and fine print of the blockbuster trade remain unclear, but this is what the deal looks like now.

Rantanen, 28, currently has 25 goals with 39 assists for 64 points in 49 games with the Avalanche. No extension is currently in place for Rantanen and the Hurricanes.

While not of the same caliber as Rantanen, the 26-year-old Necas has emerged with 16 goals and 39 assists for 55 points in 49 games in Carolina. Drury, 24, has three goals with six assists for nine points in 39 games in a supporting role.

On a rebuilding Blackhawks team, former first-overall pick Hall has nine goals with 15 assists for 24 points in 46 games.

The Islanders host the Hurricanes on Saturday night at 7:30 PM before hosting the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night at 7:30 PM.
