Islanders Lose Simon Holmstrom In Loss To Pittsburgh

The New York Islanders lost 3-2 to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday night and also lost forward Simon Holmstrom.

The 23-year-old, who has been one of the bright spots in a season full of negatives, seemed to suffer an apparent lower-body injury after a collision in the third period.

He left the ice at 8:46 to play in the third period, leaving the bench and not returning.

With Monday a mandatory off day following their weekend back-to-back, the earliest update on Holmstrom status is likely to be Tuesday morning ahead of their 1 PM New Year's Eve game against the Toronto Maple Leafs up north.

The Islanders have only had a fully healthy forward group for the better part of nine games. Anthony Duclair, who was injured in the fifth game of the season, returned in game No. 34.

Holmstrom has nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points in 36 games this season, averaging 16:34 minutes per game.

NOTE: Duclair didn't play the final 5:08 of the third period, but this was not believed to be due to anything injury-related.
