Iowa State notifies NCAA of 15 athletes in violation of sports wagering rules
Iowa State said it has notified the NCAA of approximately 15 athletes on the football, wrestling and track and field teams for online sports wagering, which would violate NCAA rules.
The Cyclones are the second school in their state to run afoul of NCAA gambling guidelines on Monday alone. Earlier Monday, the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission said it initiated an investigation into the University of Iowa baseball team, which held four players out of its most recent series. Last week, University of Alabama baseball had wagers on the team halted in several states once regulators flagged betting irregularities and the head coach was fired.
“Iowa State University and its Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is aware of online sports wagering allegations involving approximately 15 of our active student-athletes from the sports of football, wrestling and track & field in violation of NCAA rules," the school said in a statement. "The university has notified the NCAA and will take the appropriate actions to resolve these issues."
NCAA sports wagering rules do not allow athletes or athletics employees to bet on any sport at any level, including professional contests, or to share information for sports wagering purposes.
