Interest from Manchester City in Bayer Leverkusen star hinges on future of first-team player

Manchester City have discussed the profile and potential interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong, however any move for the player reportedly hinges on other factors.

The Manchester City Academy graduate is currently representing the Netherlands at the ongoing European Championships in Germany, and fresh off the back of a historic campaign with Xabi Alonso and Bayer Leverkusen.

Having registered 47 appearances across all competitions for the eventual winners of the German top-flight last campaign, Frimpong established himself as one of the finest operators in an attacking full-back role.

With 14 goals and 12 assists, there were very few right-backs across Europe who managed to excel as strongly as Jeremie Frimpong, and it now comes as no surprise to understand that he has been the subject of conversations at some of the continent’s biggest clubs.

The Premier League champions can now be thrown into that equation, with a new report explaining the nature of discussions within the Etihad Stadium offices surrounding potential interest in the Amsterdam-born defender.

According to the information of The Athletic’s Sam Lee, Manchester City have ‘discussed’ Bayer Leverkusen and the Netherlands right-back Jeremie Frimpong in recent months, following an exemplary campaign for their former Academy starlet.

However, it is explained that a deal for the 23-year-old would only have been accelerated if current club captain Kyle Walker, who is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, were to leave this summer.

Unfortunately for those wanting to see the club make a move for Xabi Alonso’s star defender, The Athletic reports that an exit for Walker away from Manchester City in the coming weeks and months ‘does not seem likely’.

Kyle Walker was voted as Manchester City’s new first-team club captain last summer, following Ilkay Gundogan’s exit on a free transfer to FC Barcelona in light of a historic Treble success with Pep Guardiola’s 2022/23 squad.

Whilst Walker leaded the City side to a historic fourth successive Premier League title win, as well as maiden UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup successes, some have questioned the England international’s ability to perform at the highest level given his age.

Last summer brought about plenty of speculation surrounding Kyle Walker’s club level future, with Bayern Munich widely understood to have pursued a deal for the player, which was in-turn entertained and negotiated by the full-back himself.

However, following dialogue with Manchester City officials and Pep Guardiola himself, the former Aston Villa and Tottenham man opted to remain at the Etihad Stadium, penning a contract extension in the process.
