Mehdi Taremi scored his opening Inter Milan goal in last night’s fantastic 4-0 UEFA Champions League triumph against Red Star Belgrade.

During his post-match interview with Inter TV, as reported by FCInterNews, the former Porto goal-getter thanked his teammates for helping him find his feet at Giuseppe Meazza.

Inter signed Taremi on a free transfer in the summer to be a backup option for Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram.

However, the Iranian’s early showings in the Nerazzurri jersey show he’s unwilling to play second fiddle to anyone.

At Porto, he was a standout performer.

And by the looks of things, he demands his place under the spotlight in Italy. Not by his words but by his performances.

Fit and firing after overcoming an injury setback earlier in the season, Taremi looks to be firing on all cylinders.

He scores and assists.

While he’s yet to find the net in Serie A, it’s probably only a matter of time.

As long as Taremi keeps delivering performances like this, he will be a genuine contender for a starting berth.

Last night, he was a thorn in Red Star’s side.

Indeed, the 32-year-old made two game-defining assists before slotting home a late penalty.

The goal was a fitting reward for the new Inter center-forward’s phenomenal display.

Mehdi Taremi was humble after the match, giving much of the credit for his brilliant showing to his teammates.

“I’m happy with the goal, I thank my teammates who helped me,” he said.

“It was a tough game, we did well to break the deadlock immediately, we knew that, otherwise it could become complicated.”

Lautaro Martinez gave Taremi a chance to score from the spot, even though he’s the designated penalty-taker at Inter.

It was a kind gesture that showed how healthy is the atmosphere within the squad.

“The penalty? Lautaro is the captain, I thank him for giving me the penalty and letting me score.

“We are a family. Inter are a great team, it’s a pleasure to play at such an important club.”
