Legendary former Inter Milan captain Beppe Bergomi feels that the lack of goals from Lautaro Martinez is “no cause for alarm.”

The 1982 World Cup winner backed the current Nerazzurri captain in an interview in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

There is no hiding the fact that Inter captain Martinez is currently struggling for goals.

The Argentine has scored just once across the past two months in an Inter shirt.

That is simply not up to the standards that the usually prolific Martinez has set for himself.

Earlier in the season, the problem had appeared to be a lack of fitness. Having returned late without a proper preseason, the Argentine lacked sharpness and dynamism around the penalty area.

Now, Martinez has been getting good chances more consistently.

But some glaring recent misses have seen the 27-year-old fail to capitalize on them.

Moreover, there has been a certain air of Martinez trying to force the ball into the net. And of his teammates going out of their way to try and set the Inter captain up.

Inter Legend Beppe Bergomi: “Lautaro Martinez Lack Of Goals No Cause For Alarm”

Former Inter captain Bergomi advised the current Nerazzurri skipper to “stay calm.”

“But he’s already doing that,” Bergomi went on. “You can see it on his face, you can read it in his eyes.”

“Before, when he would go through tough periods, he had a much more sullen expression.”

“I don’t see it as a mental problem,” Bergomi said of Martinez’s lack of goals.

“For me, there’s still no cause for alarm.”

“The team is functioning just fine anyway,” he noted. “The other players are scoring, the performances are there.”

“Of course, I have to think about the future of this team,” Bergomi did caution, however.

“Lautaro’s goals can’t be done without forever. To win trophies, you need them.”

“But they’ll arrive eventually…” Bergomi added.

Bergomi then argued that Martinez “is in a different situation from the many other strikers I’ve seen at Inter who’ve also gone through these difficult periods.”

“He knows that everyone loves him,” Bergomi said of the Inter captain.

“And, importantly, he knows that he’s never going to hear the discontent of the San Siro when things are going wrong.”

“That’s because of him. His charisma, everything he’s done that no one can forget.”

“However,” Bergomi admitted. “I can’t understand what happens to him in certain moments, particularly because his leadership and work for the team are indisputable.”

Meanwhile, Bergomi said that the way Martinez’s teammates have been going out of their way to set the Argentine up is “wrong.”

“If I have the chance to shoot, I have to shoot,” he argued.

“Trying to assist Lautaro at all costs is useless.”
