Inter Milan got the job done against Sparta Prague in the Champions League, but must raise the level of their performances in Europe.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They argue the Nerazzurri’s performance and margin of victory weren’t enough for another deep run in the competition.

In the end, the most important thing for Inter against Sparta Prague was the result.

The Nerazzurri went into the match knowing that three points would put them right on the verge of direct qualification for the Champions League round of sixteen.

And that is exactly what Inter got. They scored early through an excellently-taken Lautaro Martinez and then held onto that advantage.

In the view of the Gazzetta, however, Inter’s performance was far from convincing.

The Nerazzurri seemed too content after their captain Martinez had inspired them to an early lead.

That has been the story with Inter quite often in Europe this season.

The Nerazzurri had also held out for 1-0 wins against the likes of Arsenal and RB Leipzig after going ahead in the first half.

And against Bayer Leverkusen the Nerazzurri had paid for this approach. They seemed to play for a 0-0 draw, but succumbed to a last-ditch Leverkusen winner.

The Gazzetta argue that Inter must start to take a more proactive, aggressive stance in their European matches.

So far, Inter’s defensive solidity and capacity for individual inspiration in the final third have been enough.

But they may not be forever when the knockout rounds begin.
