Inter Milan Face One Crucial Hurdle In Efforts To Sign Back Italy U21 Defender

Inter Milan have yet to secure the green light from Salernitana to loan back defender Lorenzo Pirola this summer.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper report that the Nerazzurri want to sign the 22-year-old on an initial loan deal.

Defender Pirola is a player who has come back onto Inter’s radar.

The Italian Under-21 international is in fact a player who came through the Nerazzurri’s youth academy system.

Inter sold Pirola to Salernitana last summer. This was after he had already spent the previous campaign with the Campanian club.

Prior to this, Pirola had spent the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons on loan with Monza in Serie B, helping the Brianzoli to an historic first promotion to the top flight.

Reportedly, Inter are considering Pirola as a defensive target for this summer, though.

There is little doubt that the Nerazzurri will sign a defender during the transfer window.

The reason for this is a serious injury to wingback Tajon Buchanan. With the Canadian set to spend several months out on the sideline, Carlos Augusto will have to play more as a wingback.

The Brazilian had frequently deputized in the back three last season.

But now, Inter will need a different player who can back up Alessandro Bastoni on the left of the defense.

One idea for the Nerazzurri would be to sign a low-cost or free transfer signing on a short-term deal.

But on the other hand, Inter would also consider investing in a player who is on the younger side and has room for growth.

Pirola would certainly fit this profile. At 22, he is a player with potential to improve, and future resale value.

Moreover, the fact that Pirola already has familiarity with the Inter environment and would help for Champions League squad list purposes is another plus.

Pirola has experience playing on the left of a back three with Salernitana.

But according to Tuttosport, Inter would only aim to sign Pirola if it is on an initial loan deal with a purchase option.

And the newspaper reports that as of yet, Salernitana have yet to open up to such a transfer. They would rather sell Pirola in a permanent deal.
