Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is set to be benched for this evening’s Champions League clash with Man City, with Mehdi Taremi to start.

This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews. They also report that the likes of Yann Bisseck and Piotr Zielinski could get a chance to start this evening.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has a tough decision to make in attack in his team’s Champions League opener.

Nerazzurri captain Lautaro Martinez has not looked anywhere near his best across the first few matches of the season.

Martinez started in Inter’s Serie A draw against Monza over the weekend. He failed to score or assist a goal.

That followed starts against Genoa and Atalanta before the international break, also without finding the back of the net. Martinez had been unavailable against Lecce due to injury.

Beyond the lack of goals or assist, Martinez’s performances have been lacklustre.

Fitness has clearly played a role in the Inter captain’s early season form. He has not looked fresh, having made a late return to preseason following the Copa America with Argentina.

According to Sky, Inzaghi has decided that he will leave his captain out of the lineup this evening.

The Inter coach will instead give a chance to Iranian international striker Taremi.

Taremi, who joined Inter on a free transfer in the summer, has made one start so far this season. He was in the lineup for Inter’s Serie A win over Lecce.

And the 32-year-old will partner Marcus Thuram up front for the Nerazzurri against City this evening.

Meanwhile, there are a couple other notable selections that Inzaghi is ready to make, reports Sky.

In defense, Germany Under-21 international Yann Bisseck can take the place of Benjamin Pavard.

And in midfield, the broadcaster anticipates Piotr Zielinski will make his first start of the season.
