Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez offered his verdict on a gut-wrenching Supercoppa Italiana defeat yesterday evening.

During his post-game talk with InterTV via FCInterNews, El Toro assessed AC Milan’s come-from-behind 3-2 victory in Riyadh.

After a catalog of wasted chances against Atalanta, the 27-year-old returned to the scoresheet to open the scoring last night.

Mehdi Taremi joined him on the board early in the second half, putting clear daylight between the sides.

However, complacency got the better of Simone Inzaghi’s side as they allowed Milan to turn the game on its head.

In doing so, Inter spurned a glorious chance to draw level with record-time champions Juventus.

What’s worse, they let the Rossoneri claim bragging rights for the second time this season.

A second consecutive defeat to Milan for the first time in over a decade didn’t sit well with Lautaro.

Indeed, he delivered a damning assessment of Inter’s performance after going up 2-0.

Lautaro Martinez Assesses Inter Milan Disappointing Supercoppa Italiana Defeat

“After going 2-0 up, we weren’t able to play as Inter and do what we had done up to that point,” El Toro admitted.

“They reopened the game, and it became difficult, though we also had chances. They were good at scoring.”

Asked whether Inter’s ambition to score a third opened the door for Milan’s comeback, he replied: “That could be the case.

“We’ll review it calmly and understand the mistakes. We’re halfway through the season, with many matches still to play.

“This defeat must help us stay even more united for the challenges ahead.”

As a true professional, Martinez congratulated Milan on the win.

“In the first half, we handled Milan well,” he said. “Then we went 2-0 up and dropped off, even though we had chances.

“Details make the difference in these games.

“I want to congratulate Milan because they deserved to win based on what they did in the final 15 minutes.”

Inter will resume their Serie A title defense next weekend against Venezia as Lautaro expects his side to return to winning ways.

“I’m very confident in the team. Nicolo Barella and I talked a lot in the locker room; he felt it was important to do so.

“We need to focus on all the objectives ahead of us. We’re a strong group, and we must honor the pride of wearing this jersey.”
