There is consensus about the fact that Inter are among the Serie A sides with the deepest squad, with summer additions Piotr Zielinski and Mehdi Taremi having further strengthened the team, notably by providing more offensive solutions.

However, the opening five months of the season also highlighted some issues that may be worth fixing during the January transfer window if the Nerazzurri don’t want to find themselves unprepared in the coming months when their fixture list will be littered with crucial games both domestically and internationally.

Acerbi’s injuries prompt Inter to consider defensive signing

Inter’s defence looks like their most vulnerable point at this stage – coach Simone Inzaghi has often reiterated how the injuries of Francesco Acerbi and Benjamin Pavard, with Carlos Augusto also remaining sidelined for a few weeks, have hindered chances of rotating the players as he would have wished.

As a result, Yann Bisseck got several opportunities and proved reliable enough to feature against teams like Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League but above all, the Nerazzurri must thank Stefan De Vrij for showcasing a kind of consistency in his displays that was hard to expect at his age and after his past injuries.

Acerbi’s repeated physical troubles are making the Dutch defender’s presence absolutely crucial for Inzaghi, but the Biscione should not presume things will necessarily stay like that until the end of the season, which is why they should consider signing another reliable centre-back, with Udinese’s Jaka Bijol reportedly on top of their list.

Inter need more goals from their attackers

Compared to the past season, the Nerazzurri have decided to bring in Mehdi Taremi from Porto to replace Alexis Sanchez, with Marko Arnautovic and Joaquin Correa, who returned from a loan at Marseille, completing the attacking department.

A striker with significant experience, the Iran international has started all of the Nerazzurri’s Champions League games so far but has not provided the scoring contribution everyone at the San Siro was hoping for, his only net coming from the penalty spot against Red Star.

Therefore, Inter’s firepower has once again been strictly connected to the form of Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez, with the latter netting 12 of the 21 goals scored by Inzaghi’s strikers across all competitions.

Ideally, the Biscione should also make a reliable and prolific player up front a priority for their winter transfer window, but chances are this could only happen if they manage to offload Arnautovic.
