Insider: Jeremy Swayman Considering Requesting Trade From Bruins

Yesterday (Sept. 30), Cam Neely insinuated to reporters that the Boston Bruins have offered Jeremy Swayman a $64 million contract. The Bruins president said, "I have 64 million reasons why I'd be playing right now."

Later in the evening, Swayman's agent, Lewis Gross, released a statement to defend his client. He stated that there was never a $64 million offer on the table. He ended his statement with the following: "We are extremely disappointed. This was not fair to Jeremy. We will take a few days to discuss where we go from here."

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Gross' statement indicates that Swayman is considering requesting a trade from the Bruins.

Here is what Friedman said on the matter:

"The moment Neely said, "I have 64 million reasons why I’d be playing right now," speculation ran rampant that Swayman would formally ask for a trade. The statement reveals one obvious truth — he is considering it."

Friedman also added:

"Never make life-changing decisions when you're emotional. How does he feel over the next 24-48 hours? That determines where we go."

There is no question that tension between the Bruins and Swayman has escalated, especially after yesterday. However, after taking a pause from the ongoing situation, it is possible that things could cool down between both parties.

However, if Swayman were to officially request a trade from the Bruins, that would put them in an even more challenging spot. After trading fellow star Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators during the summer, moving Swayman would significantly hurt them between the pipes.

The last notable Bruin to request a trade from the Original Six club was Jake DeBrusk during the 2021-22 season. In the end, he was not moved, and he ended up putting together some solid season with the B's before signing with the Vancouver Canucks this summer.

We will now need to watch what happens with Swayman from here on out. Here's hoping that both sides can overcome their bitterness and find a way to finalize a contract.
