Injury Update: Red Wings Without Talbot, Lyon vs. Maple Leafs
Throughout the first half of the 2024-25 season, the Detroit Red Wings have struggled to sustain positive momentum, while bad times have tended to linger. After last night's loss in Philadelphia came more bad news: Cam Talbot—who started against the Flyers and was, without question, Detroit's best player, stopping 32 of the 34 shots he faced, including a deluge of chances in the second period—tweaked his lower body injury in practice and won't be available for tomorrow night's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Alex Lyon—approaching full health, but having not played since Nov. 25—won't be available either. Instead, against the Maple Leads, the Red Wings will return to Ville Husso—whose last appearance ended after one period and seven shots, having conceded three goals on Monday night against the Sabres—in net.
Coach Derek Lalonde provided that news (as relayed by MLive's Ansar Khan) after Friday's practice at BELFOR Performance Center in Little Caesars Arena. Per Lalonde, the Red Wings are hopeful to have Lyon for Wednesday's game against the Flyers, and Detroit will call up a backup goaltender from Grand Rapids to face the Leafs tomorrow.
That could mean the return of Sebastian Cossa, who played two periods and earned the shootout win Monday in relief of Husso before being sent back to the Griffins, though the Red Wings may opt to bring up a veteran like Jack Campbell (who happens to be a former Maple Leaf) should they not expect the call-up to see any game action.
The Red Wings have found challenges in seemingly each phase of their game over the course of the season, but goaltending his mostly been a bright spot. The present cloud of injuries threatens to buck that trend, but regardless of Husso's form tomorrow night, should the team in front of him play as it did last night in Philadelphia—plagued by ill-timed giveaways and defensive lapses—the goaltender of choice may not be of any significance.
