Injured Real Madrid defender expected to return at the end of 2024
Real Madrid’s central defence is turning into a real worry for Carlo Ancelotti. Beginning the season with just two fit senior players in the department, the Los Blancos endured a shaky start to the new campaign.
The recent injury to Eder Militao, however, has left the alarm bells ringing. The men in white head into the game against Real Sociedad having to rely on Jesus Vallejo and it is clear that the situation is far from favourable.
Eyes on David Alaba
Part of the reason why Real Madrid’s squad depth in defence is shallow at the moment is David Alaba’s injury.
Ruled out with an ACL tear, the Austrian star has been on the sidelines for several months now. His return, needless to say, will go a long way in fortifying the defence.
As revealed in a recent report by Rodra (h/t Madrid Xtra), Alaba’s return to the field is expected near the end of 2024. The player has had good feelings in recent weeks and there is optimism over his return.
Given the nature of his injury, no risk will be taken and the Austrian international’s return will not be rushed. After all, he is likely to play a key role at the tail end of the current season if Real Madrid wish for a strong finish.
Last season, the veteran made 14 La Liga appearances for the team, overseeing four clean sheets and averaging close to six defensive actions per game. Further, he recorded one assist and a pass completion rate of 91%.
While Ancelotti will hope for the defender to beat the deadline and return early, he must make do with his existing resources for the next few months at least. The situation ahead of the clash at San Sebastian, in particular, is worrying.
