All Indications Point Toward Rangers Not Naming A Captain This Season

Since trading Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks in November, the New York Rangers have been without a captain.

Shortly after Trouba’s departure, Peter Laviolette confirmed that he does not plan to name a captain for the time being.

“Not right now,” Laviolette said about if the Rangers have a timeline on naming a captain. “We’ve got a leadership group that we’ve been dealing with the whole time. Right now, we’re moving forward with that.”

It’s now been over two months without a captain and it doesn't seem like the team plans on changing anything at least for the remainder of the year.

Laviolette recently mentioned a few players that have stepped up as leaders in light of Trouba’s absence, but did not mention anything about the captain vacancy.

“Especially in this last month and finding success when we needed to, the guys both on the ice and in the locker room for me have identified as leaders and have done a really good job,” Laviolette said.

“For me I think Ryan Lindgren through his play has come back and has provided some good leadership inside our team based on what he’s doing on the ice. I think Trocheck always jumps in and helps out with leadership. You gotta have the guys in the room and on the ice doing the right things and coming to work, in the room and on the ice making sure we are ready to play. I think the guys have done a good job. I think they are all open up.”

It’s safe to assume the Rangers won’t name a captain this season, but don’t be surprised if the Blueshirts have a new captain before the start of the 2025-26 campaign.
