Who impressed, an injury, multiple fights and notes from second Dolphins-Falcons practice

Notes, highlights and thoughts from Wednesday’s Dolphins joint practice with the Atlanta Falcons:

▪ The second day of Dolphins-Falcons joint practices was marred by two major brawls and two other dustups.

Regrettably for the Dolphins, it also was marred by an injury to Dolphins center Aaron Brewer, who had his hand examined by trainers before leaving the field and heading toward the team’s medical facility.

Brewer then returned from the Baptist Health Center and watched some of practice.

This was not a good day for the Dolphins offense, aside from a few nice plays in the passing game from Julian Hill, Jonnu Smith and Malik Washington. Tua Tagovailoa and the offensive line weren’t particularly sharp.

As for the brawls, the instigators could not be confirmed, because they happened from the further point where media is seated.

During the first fight, Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey grabbed a helmet and tossed it.

Punches were thrown during the second fight, and players were tossed to the ground.

Both fights involved the Falcons offense and Dolphins defense. Both units were then called over to the sideline for a two-minute cooling off period.

Later on, Falcons receiver Rondale Moore threw a ball at safety Elijah Campbell after catching a pass. That was one of a couple minor dustups.

▪ The Dolphins remained without receivers Odell Beckham Jr., Jaylen Waddle, Braxton Berrios, Erik Ezukanma and Anthony Schwartz; safety Jordan Poyer (missed a sixth practice in a row), safety Jevon Holland and edge player Mo Kamara, who missed a second practice in a row.

Holland seemed to injure himself Tuesday but completed the practice and said afterward that he felt fine. So Miami was without both starting safeties on Wednesday – Holland and Poyer, who has a noticeable limp.

Cornerback Cam Smith, who missed a week of practice before returning Monday, seemed to re-injure himself Tuesday and was not spotted at Wednesday’s practice.

Three veterans weren’t working on Wednesday, but the team doesn’t specify if it’s because of injuries or veteran rest. Three four veterans: offensive tackle Terron Armstead, defensive tackle Calais Campbell and defensive tackle Benito Jones.

Right tackle Austin Jackson and cornerback Kendall Fuller did not participate in some of the 11 on 11 drills.

▪ Receiver River Cracraft wore the orange jersey bestowed on the standout in the previous day’s practice.

▪ Dolphins linebackers Cam Brown and Curtis Bolton were involved in a special teams dust up with the Falcons, with John FitzPatrick among the involved Falcons.

▪ The Dolphins’ red zone drills had mixed results.

Tua Tagovailoa had a seven yard completion to River Cracraft to start the drills but the drive then stalled, with the Falcons swarming Tagovailoa on one pass rush.

Then Jonnu Smith caught a five-yard TD from Tagovailoa. But the Falcons then forced another Tagovailoa incompletion with a heavy pass rush led by David Onyemata.

The offensive line struggled at times without Armstead and Isaiah Wynn (and Jackson for the first set of 11 on 11s). Keon Smith and Kendall Lamm got a lot of work on Wednesday.

Skylar Thompson then got red zone reps and rolled out for a touchdown throw to FAU rookie Je’Quan Burton.

Rookie running back Jaylen Wright then had a seven-yard gain.

Chris Brooks ran for a seven yard touchdown, behind good blocks from Lester Cotton and Ryan Hayes. Soon after, Durham Smythe then dropped an easy TD catch from White.

▪ Here’s what happened on Atlanta’s red zone drills:

Bijan Robinson was stopped by Dolphins linebacker Cam Brown for a three-yard gain… Kirk Cousins hit Drake London, beating Siran Neal, for a first down in red zone drills. Soon after, Tyler Allgiere scored on a five-yard TD run…

Dolphins rookie cornerback Isaiah Johnson had a nice end zone breakup on a pass to Casey Washington. Johnson later had another pass breakup; the Syracuse rookie has had some good moments in recent days.

▪ Punter Jake Bailey had two 60-yard field goals.

▪ Tyreek Hill fielded a few punts; he had a fair catch on one and danced for at least 10 yards on another.

▪ In 11 on 11 drills, Tagovailoa hit a wide open Julian Hill for what looked like a long touchdown. But Tagovailoa was off on three of his next four throws, badly sailing one of them.

▪ Ramsey drew a pass interference on a long pass to Darnell Mooney.

▪ Bijan Robinson had a long outside run. Miami’s edge setting was delinquent on that play.

▪ Jeff Wilson Jr. ran for four yards on a toss play.

▪ After Braylon Sanders dropped a pass, Skylar Thompson hit Malik Washington for 40 yards. Thompson has made some really nice downfield throws in recent days.

▪ Mike White then hit Malik Washington, who made a very good catch 20 yards downfield. This was a big day for the Virginia rookie, who has rebounded from a slow start to camp.

▪ Grayson Murphy pressured Michael Penix Jr. before he threw an incomplete pass deep. Later, Storm Duck broke up a Penix downfield pass.

▪ Achane was bottled up on a running play.

▪ Tight end Jody Fortson has a drop, at least his third in camp. Fortson had five receptions on Monday but has otherwise had an unremarkable camp.

▪ Tagovailoa, after a poor 15 minute stretch, hit Jonnu Smith on a screen pass for about 8 yards. But then Tua was short on another throw.

▪ Kaleb McGary pushed Dolphins rookie Chop Robinson to the ground on a downfield completion.

▪ Nik Needham limited a Falcons receiver to a short gain. Needham has said he’s playing both nickel cornerback and safety.

▪ Dolphins defensive tackle Isaiah Mack and linebacker Brown combined on a tackle for loss.

▪ Falcons cornerback Anthony Johnson jumped a route and prevented a Thompson completion to Burton.

▪ Tagovailoa and Brewer spent more time working on quarterback/center exchanges before Brewer left with his hand injury.

▪ Back in 11 on 11 drills, Tagovailoa overthrew Cracraft for what could have been a touchdown. Tagovailoa’s accuracy was uncharacteristically uneven.

Later, a pass to Willie Snead Jr. was broken up.

▪ Mike White had a short TD throw to Jonnu Smith.
