(Image): Chelsea player does exactly what his manager told him not to with brutal result
Noni Madueke gave Chelsea the lead in this game with a tap in to an empty net. But later in he half he cost them a goal with some criminal defending.
He failed to keep the defensive line as Man City attacked, meaning Matheus Nunes was onside to run in behind. Not only that, but Madueke also let Josko Gvardiol run off his back to finish the move.
We had the lead against City, the crowd were flat and we were making chances. We should have been making it 2-0, instead it’s 1-1 and the crowd are up. It’s criminal lack of focus in a huge game. You can have as much talent as you like, if you can’t stay switched on for 90 minutes, you don’t belong at this level.
You can see the moment the ball was played in the image featured above for an idea of the error.
Dozy winger costs his team a goal – and maybe more
We’re not going to be too harsh on Noni, but there’s no denying this was a double mistake which really cost his team.
Given he’s a player who Enzo Maresca is constantly individually challenging to step up and bring more focus and defensive nous – even as recently as this week – this is absolutely criminal. It’s one thing to be a bit sloppy and slow in your pressing towards the opposition’s goal, it’s another thing entirely to be this dozy in your own defensive line, when leading a game 1-0 against Man City away.
Things like this cost you goals, games and trophies. Those are the levels we have to demand from every player. Maresca has criticised Madueke for slacking off after he scores a goal – what better example do you want than this?
