Prep football recap: Riding their ‘machine,’ Vallivue outlasts Emmett; Timberline, Kuna win
Onix Carson spent the summer lifting weights twice a day and eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to beef up for the 2024 football season.
Hand that kid another PB&J coach. He’s earned it.
The Vallivue junior running back amassed 220 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries to ensure the Falcons an 18-14 victory over Emmett on Friday at Vallivue High School in Caldwell.
Carson averaged 8.8 yards per carry, surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark for the third straight game and scored the go-ahead touchdown with 13 seconds left.
“I call him Optimus Prime, because he’s just a machine,” Vallivue coach Shea McClellin said. “He’s an alien not from this planet. He runs extremely hard. I feel bad for teams that have to tackle and have to go against him, because he runs so hard with the ball. He’s just a machine. He does it all for us.”
In a tight game between teams fighting for the top spot in the 5A Southern Idaho Conference, the Falcons (3-1, 2-0) got the ball back with 2:42 left in the fourth quarter facing a 14-12 deficit.
Vallivue passed on its first play of the drive — from its own 12-yard line — but turned to its ground game the rest of the way.
On first-and-goal from the Emmett 8-yard-line after a timeout, Carson powered his way to the 1. The Falcons called his number once again on the ensuing play, and this time Carson took a dive over an Emmett defender and landed in the end zone for the game-winning score.
“I had to get it in, so I did whatever I could,” Carson said. “I saw the inside was plugged and bounced outside.”
The win puts Vallivue in a tie with defending state champion Bishop Kelly (4-1, 2-0) for first place in the 5A SIC and also matches the Falcons’ win total from all of last season.
“I’m just so happy for our guys and the way that they fought,” McClellin said. “They’re totally buying into what we want as coaches — to be a physical, tough, all-around team. They’re playing for each other.”
The Falcons got on the scoreboard first Friday night on an 8-yard pass from senior quarterback Isaac Moore to senior receiver Briggs Marler. But the Huskies (4-2, 2-1) looked poised to spoil Vallivue’s homecoming, scoring on senior Sammy Howe’s 3-yard run in the second quarter, then getting a 26-yard TD run from junior Lincoln Thayn to go up 14-6 with 3:03 to play in the third quarter.
Taking advantage of a 45-yard run from Carson to the Emmett 25-yard line to start their next drive, the Falcons turned to a little trickery.
The play — known as “Duck” — was a reverse flea flicker in which Moore handed off to Carson, who reversed it to Marler, who then flipped it back to Moore. Moore tossed the football 26 yards to senior Mason Enochson in the end zone for the touchdown.
“Sometimes you’ve just got to take risks, and I’m not afraid to take risks,” McClellin said. “It’s kind of that go-big-or-go-home mentality. I’m willing to risk it for the biscuit.”
Emmett took more than 7 minutes off the clock in the fourth quarter on a 14-play drive that ended when the Vallivue defense made a key stop on fourth-and-5 from the 14-yard line, setting up the Falcons’ game-winning drive.
“We did it for our teammates,” said Vallivue linebacker Jayden Cagle, who grabbed a fourth-quarter interception. “We did it for the team. We did it for each and every one of us. The brother next to us.”
Moore completed 9-of-14 passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns, and senior receiver Austin Belnap had a team-best five receptions for 51 yards to help balance Carson’s big night.
Thayn paced Emmett with 111 yards on 15 carries, while quarterback Ryder Scheibe was 6-for-12 for 64 yards.
