Icethetics: Capitals Could Bring Back Black Screamin' Eagle Jersey For 50th Anniversary

The Washington Capitals have a lot in store to celebrate their 50th anniversary this coming season, and it's possible that their plans could include a new alternate jersey. And there's new speculation brewing that the jersey could very well be the black "Screamin' Eagle" sweaters.

Per Icethetics, there are clues that suggest that Washington could be bringing back the black Reverse Retro jerseys they wore in 2022-23 that feature the Screamin' Eagle.

On Instagram, an account titled "95takengive" showed a T.J. Oshie Screamin' Eagle jersey on sale with Fanatics Premium branding, the equivalent to Adidas' "authentic" line. The account is an Indonesian jersey re-seller, and as Icethetics says, the jerseys pictured appear to be legitimate.

Additionally, Icethetics explained that branding wouldn't be expected unless the team planned to bring back the jersey, and reviving a past sweater would be a workaround to bringing back a new design for the 50th anniversary. Fanatics had asked teams to hold off on new designs as it takes over for Adidas as the league's official jersey provider.

Bringing back these jerseys would be a big win for the Capitals, as critics and fans responded positively to these sweaters when they were introduced just a season ago.

Alex Ovechkin even said he wanted to keep the jerseys around; the 38-year-old scored in each game he wore the black Screamin' Eagle sweater that season. He also surpassed Gordie Howe for second on the NHL's all-time goals list with a two-goal performance in that jersey on Dec. 23, 2022, against the Winnipeg Jets.

Ovechkin currently sits 42 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's record.

Washington opens its 50th anniversary season in October, and the year will feature a number of additional festivities to boot.
