Hurricanes Goalie Pyotr Kochetkov Goes Old School With Big Hit

If there's one thing you can say about Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov, it's that he's definitely unorthodox.

Whether it's his poke checks, his interviews or really anything to do with the Russian netminder, what's true is that he has a style all his own which makes him so unique and oh so entertaining.

And last night's game against the Dallas Stars gave us another taste of some of that uniqueness.

We've all seen the fieriness of Kochetkov from his AHL days or the run ins he's had with Brad Marchand or Brady Tkachuk, and it looks like channeled that energy and decided to try out a new role, that of the enforcer.

Late in the second period, Dallas forward Mavrik Borque went to cycle a puck around the wall behind the Hurricanes net, however Kochetkov came out to shut him down.

He went to poke check away the puck, but at the same time laid the body into Borque along the walls, laying out the youngster.

Unfortunately the NHL did not credit Kochetkov with the hit and instead he'll have to settle for the 22-save performance and win.

Kochetkov was really good last night, stopping multiple in-alone looks, breakaways and more as he stymied Dallas to secure the win for his team.

"He was able to shut it down for us," said Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour. "That's the position. We talk about it over and over and over. If our guy can be better than the guy at the other end, then we're usually in good shape."

In all seriousness though, Borque should actually be commended for this play because he pulled up and tried his best to avoid Kochetkov. He could have really done some damage had he just kept skating through Carolina's netminder and instead we get to joke about this funny play.
