Hurricanes add pledge from Michigan State’s Charles Brantley as portal push continues

Michigan State’s Charles Brantley celebrates after the win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

A busy Saturday in the transfer portal continues for the Miami Hurricanes.

After already landing three pledges earlier in the day, Miami continued the momentum with a commitment from Michigan State cornerback Charles Brantley, who is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 9 overall cornerback and No. 84 overall player currently available in the portal.

Brantley visited UM this weekend and had said the Hurricanes and Illinois were his top two.

Brantley, who has one year of eligibility left, was one of the country’s top cover corners last season. Quarterbacks had a 16.6 passer rating when targeting Brantley, with him giving up just 14 receptions in 37 targets for 149 yards and no touchdowns while intercepting three passes That passer rating was the against in the country against all FBS cornerbacks targeted at least 20 times.

He missed the final three games this season with a leg injury.

For his college career, Brantley has five interceptions and 18 pass breakups.

Brantley will help beef up Miami’s cornerback position where the team is slated to have three experienced players set to return next season in OJ Frederique, Damari Brown and Dyoni Hill. UM also is expected to pursue former Wisconsin cornerback Xavier Lucas, a former Plantation American Heritage standout who entered the transfer portal this week.

Brantley’s pledge came after Miami already received three other commitments in the portal earlier Saturday in Louisiana Tech defensive tackle David Blay along with FAU kicker/kickoff specialist Carter Davis and Charlotte long snapper Adam Booker.
