'We Hung Around, But That's Basically All We Did Tonight': Jordan Staal, Andrei Svechnikov, Rod Brind'Amour On Loss In New Jersey

The Carolina Hurricanes lost their first Metro division game tonight, falling 4-2 to the New Jersey Devils.

Despite an opening goal by Jack Roslovic and a game-tying goal by Andrei Svechnikov, the Canes just didn't have enough juice.

After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with captain Jordan Staal and Svechnikov spoke with the media. Here's what they had to say:

Rod Brind'Amour

On the game :
We weren't very good. We were good to start the game but then the penalties... It always seems to rear it's head. The momentum flipped on that and then with a 5-on-3, you're giving a goal away. We almost got it kind of killed, but you can't give a team like that that kind of life. We hung around, but that's basically all we did tonight. We got back into the game and then kind of had a gaffe on the game-winning goal behind the net. You're not going to win when you do that kind of stuff. It's tough. We move on.

On the mistake leading to the game-winning goal: You're just giving up puck possession in your own zone for no reason. Those are the little details that you're going to have to clean up in a game like this when it's tight. That's the difference in the game. It was a tough play, but then they got another one on the power play. You gotta stay out of the box.

On running out of momentum in the third period: The third period was fine, but the penalty just shuts you right down again and we weren't able to kill it. To me, special teams was a big factor tonight, but a bigger reason was that we were just a little flat.

Jordan Staal

On the game:
I can't take that penalty. Obviously it's pretty hard to kill with two less guys. That put us behind the eight-ball. I thought we did battling back with a big goal in the third, but then the PK let us down again, myself there too. It wasn't our best in the long scheme things, especially at 5v5. I think we were just losing too many battles and we didn't get enough zone time, enough shots, enough chaos or enough of our style and it starts to look like a game like that. Came up short.

On the third period: Obviously we had some momentum off of that big goal from Svechy and I thought we had some good chances at 5v5 right after. I think the penalties just kind of killed our momentum, twice for sure. I think if we stayed out of the box it would help. They made a good push back after we scored. It just wasn't enough from enough guys tonight. We need everybody if we want to win in this league and tonight we didn't have everybody.

On Jack Hughes: He was kind of feeling it tonight which is never a good thing. I think we were a little slow in taking away his time and space and he's a player that will make you pay very quickly. Him and Bratt both had great games and we need to do a better job of shutting them down.

Andrei Svechnikov

On the game:
We got crossbar, posts a couple of times and if one of those went in, it was going to be a different game. It was hard obviously back-to-back but it's fine.

On zone entries: Very important. Obviously on that goal, that's kind of our homework. That's what we've been doing and we just have to keep doing that and the results will come.

On the third period: Obviously we got on the penalty kill and we were killing and it's hard you know? It's hard to play a back-to-back. The third period, you have to find whatever you can get there and it just didn't go our way.

On if it was a set play on his goal: Yeah, it's homework. That's what we've been doing in the practices. That's just a good play.
