Sandro Tonali has been linked with a move to Juventus in January, but Newcastle coach Eddie Howe believes the Italian midfielder is building ‘strong’ connections with the supporters.

Tonali scored his first Newcastle brace on Wednesday night, contributing to a 3-1 win over Brentford in the EFL Cup quarter-finals.

“I think it’s a good performance, tough game. I think the goals were hugely important,” Newcastle coach Howe told reporters after the game, as quoted by the Independent.

“Sandro’s first one is an unbelievable strike and the second one is very difficult to do what he did in that moment.”

Reputable sources in Italy have recently linked Tonali with a return to Serie A. Gazzetta reported last week that Tonali wanted to return to the Peninsula, while Corriere dello Sport said the ex-Milan star was a top transfer target for Juventus.

Howe did not face questions about Tonali’s transfer status but suggested that such performances help cement his place within the club.

“He’s a big signing and you want your big signings to do well and settle quickly,” said the Newcastle boss.

“He’s been here a while, but has had very little football. Nights like tonight will build connections with him and the supporters even stronger, I’m just really pleased for him on a personal level.”

Tonali joined Newcastle from Milan in 2023 and recently returned to action after the end of a 10-month ban for illegal betting.

His contract with Newcastle expires in 2028. Tonali’s agent recently said his client is not considering leaving the Premier League.
