Houston Dynamo decline option to bring back Héctor Herrera in 2025
The Houston Dynamo will not bring back veteran defenseman Héctor Herrera for the 2025 season after declining the option to extend his contract by another year.
The club announced their end-of-season roster decisions Wednesday evening, and Herrera's departure was the most notable move.
The 34-year-old saw his season end in disastrous fashion over the weekend, being shown a red-card for spitting at the referee on a night when they Dynamo were eliminated from the MLS Cup Playoffs.
While that may sting the Dynamo faithful for the time being, Herrera did help lead the Texas club to a US Open Cup title in 2023, beating Lionel Messi and Inter Miami in the final.
“There's not a world where he returns," Dynamo General Manager Pat Onstad said. "But he was a signing who, at the time, was perfect for our club, a club that had made the playoffs once in eight years.
“He helped get us back there two consecutive years and won an Open Cup for us, had a fantastic year in '23. But by the same token, he'd probably be the first to tell you this year has been disappointing for him and his standard.”
