Hot Stove Digest: Mariners cap busy day with trade for Jarrod Dyson

Welcome to The Stew’s Hot Stove Digest, our daily rundown of MLB news, rumors and gossip for Hot Stove season. Here you’ll find a quick recap of all the day’s action and other fun stuff from around the internet that we think is worth your time.

MAKING MOVES: Never one to stay quiet for long, Seattle Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto went to work on Friday with a pair of notable trades. Early in the day, Dipoto pulled off a swap with the Baltimore Orioles, acquiring veteran right-hander Yovani Gallardo in exchange for Seth Smith. That set the dominoes in motion for the second trade, which saw Seattle acquire speedy center fielder Jarrod Dyson from Kansas City for starter Nathan Karns.

Dyson provides the Mariners with a lot more speed and some versatility, especially on defense. He can play all three outfield positions. He can also hit at the top or bottom of the lineup, giving manager Scott Servais some options. There were rumors the Mariners might pursue bigger names like Jose Bautista or Mark Trumbo, but Dyson seemed to fit their need better. Getting those players was unlikely anyway due to the price and draft pick compensation attached.

With Gallardo now in the mix, Nathan Karns became the most expandable of the team’s starting pitchers. He should get an opportunity to be in Kansas City’s rotation, but he’ll need a strong bounce back to hold down the job. [@TNT_Mariners]

WHAT’S NEXT?: With $4M freed up on Friday, the Orioles will reportedly seek another bat in addition to Seth Smith. Brandon Moss is one noted fit. Other options could include Michael Saunders and Colby Rasmus. [@jonmorosi]

STILL TALKING: The White Sox continue talking to teams about trading Jose Quintana. The Houston Astros remain a strong favorite to land him, especially now they’re reportedly willing to trade at least three respected prospects. [@sean_sears6]

TO VETO OR NOT TO VETO: FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reported Thursday that Brandon Phillips vetoed a trade to the Atlanta Braves in November. Now comes word from ESPN’s Jim Bowden that there’s a possibility the trade could still happen, but again will hinge on Phillips. [ESPN]

SHOWCASE: Veteran left-hander C.J. Wilson is “progressing steadily” following July shoulder surgery and could be ready to host a showcase in February. [@Ken_Rosenthal]

IN CONSIDERATION: The Rangers are considering pursuing free-agrent pitcher Jason Hammel. Though he may just be a contingency plan in case they can’t land Tyson Ross. [@jonmorosi]

SLEEPER SIGNING: The Texas Rangers signed Travis Snider to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training. Snider has a previous relationship with Texas skipper Jeff Banister from his Pittsburgh days, and could provide some decent depth as a left-handed bat off the bench. [@JeffWilson_FWST]

PAIR OF NEW SOX: The Chicago White Sox have agreed to a minor-league pact with former Phillies third baseman/outfielder Cody Asche. They also claimed outfielder Willy Garcia off waivers from the Pirates and designated fellow outfielder Jason Coats for assignment. [@MattEddyBA]

STILL LOOKING: The active Dodgers would still like to add a right-hander reliever. [@jonmorosi]
