Marc Cucurella hopes Chelsea can build “something good” under new manager Enzo Maresca after a strong finish to last season.

Cucurella is currently with the Spain squad preparing for Friday’s Euro 2024 quarter final against hosts Germany, and so far he’s played a key role for the national side.

The 25-year-old has taken his end of season form onto the international stage and has received plaudits for his performances at the tournament.

It’s fair to say that Cucurella has struggled for large parts of his time at Stamford Bridge following his big money move from Brighton in 2022.

During his first season at the club he struggled to settle and was even subject to boos from the Chelsea supporters, but he’s managed to completely change his fortunes in west London.

The Spain international was on the verge of joining Manchester United on loan last summer before the deal fell through, but in the end that was very much to Chelsea’s gain.

Cucurella excelled for Chelsea towards the end of last season.

He started the season behind Ben Chilwell but soon got his opportunity due to injuries and impressed at both left and right back, before suffering an ankle injury which ruled him out for over two months.

Cucurella impressed again on his return to the side, but he really stepped up over the final six games following a tactical change which saw him invert into midfield when the team were in possession.

The Spaniard looked like a new player, with fans really taking to him and chanting his name from the stands which was great to see, and he’s now hoping the club can build something under Maresca having finished last season strongly.

“A good coach has come and we need a bit of patience, not to make so many changes, to be more calm,” he told Sport.

“We finished the season very well, in Europe, and then we played a final and a semi-final.

“We didn’t win, but the year wasn’t bad. Hopefully, we can build something good.”

Cucurella could find himself playing a key role for Maresca next season given he can invert into midfield and can also play in a back three, with the Italian wanting versatility from his defenders.
