Hockey Canada Announces 48 Players Chosen For National Team Selection Camp
Hockey Canada has invited 48 players to Canada’s National Women’s Team Selection camp this month, which will take place from September 9-15 at Canada Games Park in Thorold, Ontario.
The camp roster includes 21 players from Canada's gold medal winning team from the 2024 World Championships in Utica. No fewer than 40 players named to the camp will compete in the PWHL this season.
“This is a tremendous opportunity to evaluate the depth of talent in our player pool and set the tone for the upcoming season,” said general manager Gina Kingsbury in a Hockey Canada news release. “We will also continue to grow and build on our identity as a team as we prepare for the Rivalry Series and ultimately the IIHF Women’s World Championship next April in Czechia.”
Among the players who will be attending their first senior national team camp include Emma Woods, Daryl Watts, Chloe Primerano, Emmalee Pais, Caitlin Kraemer, Kendall Cooper, and Jocelyn Amos.
The players will be split into Red and White teams for practices, fitness testing and a pair of intrasquad games on September 12 and September 14.
Of the seven goaltenders in camp, six will play in the PWHL this season including returning Team Canada netminders Ann-Renee Desbiens, Emerance Maschmeyer, and Kristen Campbell, Corinne Schroeder who got her first call to Canada's national team last year serving as the third goalie for a Rivalry Series stop, PWHL rookies Raygan Kirk (Toronto) and Kayle Osborne (New York), and NCAA netminder Eve Gascon. Maschmeyer is the lone invitee unable to attend.
On the blueline, the inclusion of Chloe Primerano, who is still eligible to play at the U-18 World Championships this season, and fast tracked to the NCAA where she'll begin this season as a rookie with the University of Minnesota is a player many will be watching. She's been touted by Hockey Canada staff as a player close to making the jump to their national team.
Claire Thompson and Micah Zandee-Hart, both former members of Team Canada are back in camp, as is Sophie Jaques who appeared at the Rivalry Series last year for Canada. Canada also invited recently drafted players headed for the PWHL this year including Stephanie Markowski (Ottawa) and Megan Carter (Toronto). Also invited was undrafted free agent Rylind MacKinnon who will be attending PWHL Toronto's training camp this fall as a camp invite.
Up front in addition to Emma Woods and Daryl Watts, there's a large PWHL contingent headed to camp who were not on last year's gold medal winning team including Loren Gabel (Boston), Victoria Bach (Toronto), Maggie Connors (Toronto), Elizabeth Giguere (New York), Jessie Eldridge, (New York), Lexie Adzija (Boston), and Sophie Shirley (Boston). Also invited were recent PWHL Draft picks Jennifer Gardiner (Montreal), Sarah Fillier (New York), Danielle Serdachny (Ottawa), and Julia Gosling (Toronto). Natalie Spooner was not invited as she rehabs from her injury.
Anne Cherkowski, who will play for Clarkson, and Kendall Cooper, who will play with Quinnipiac are the lone 2025 PWHL Draft prospects in camp.
From the PWHL, 13 members of Toronto's roster were invited to join head coach Troy Ryan and general manager Gina Kingsbury. New York had eight players invited, while Ottawa and Montreal had six, Boston had five players, and Minnesota two.
