Hill in Ireland squad for World Short Course tests

Larne swimmer Danielle Hill is among the Paris Olympians named in Ireland's squad for the World Short Course Championships in Budapest next month.

With Ireland's Paris swimming medallists Daniel Wiffen and Mona McSharry missing the championships, European 50m backstroke champion Hill will be joined in the 13-strong squad by fellow Olympians Ellen Walshe, Tom Fannon, Shane Ryan and Max McCusker.

Olympic finalist Walshe will go into the championships, which take place on 10-15 December, after winning silver in the 2021 World Short Course tests in Abu Dhabi.

Wiffen's brother Nathan is part of the Ireland squad and other Northern Ireland swimmers Ellie McCartney and Lottie Cullen have been selected.

The squad also includes John Shortt, who set a new Irish senior 200m backstroke record last weekend.

“This event is a very individualised affair, with some athletes ready and raring to go again and others needing additional time to regroup and refresh after a hectic summer, particularly one which proved to be the best ever for Ireland in Olympic waters," said Swim Ireland's national performance director Jon Rudd.

"Irish swimming is in great shape, brimming with confidence and this is a very exciting group of athletes to take into a Championships such as this as we build towards the 50m-pool version of the event in Singapore next summer."
