(Adds late games) May 5 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Tuesday's Major League Baseball games: - - - Red Sox 2, Rays 0 Mookie Betts logged his first career multi-homer game, hitting solo shots in the sixth and eighth innings to power the Boston Red Sox to a 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park. The center fielder's first home run came on an 0-1 slider to lead off the sixth inning, bouncing off the Sports Authority sign on the Green Monster in left field to give Boston its first hit off of Rays left-hander Drew Smyly (0-1). - - - Athletics 2, Twins 1 Jesse Chavez pitched into the eighth inning and Tyler Clippard got five big outs to earn the save as the Oakland Athletics defeated the Minnesota Twins 2-1. Chavez (1-2) struck out seven without allowing an earned run in 7 1/3 innings in his third start of the season. - - - Giants 6, Padres 0 Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong pitched seven shutout innings, second baseman Joe Panik hit his second home run of the season, and the San Francisco Giants won their eighth straight home game, beating the San Diego Padres at AT&T Park. In his previous start, Vogelsong gave up three home runs in the first inning and four overall in just three innings of work in a 7-3 loss to the Dodgers. This time, he allowed just three hits -- all singles -- and recorded his first victory of the season in his fourth start, improving to 1-2. - - - Braves 9, Phillies 0 Shelby Miller pitched his third career shutout and Kelly Johnson reached a career milestone in Atlanta's 9-0 win over Philadelphia. Miller (4-1) allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked one to become the first Braves pitcher to throw a complete game this season. Johnson homered and drove in four runs. He also collected his 1,000th career hit in the sixth inning with a solid single to center field. - - - White Sox 5, Tigers 2 Jeff Samardzija threw seven strong innings and the Chicago White Sox ended their five-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Detroit Tigers. Samardzija allowed two runs and seven hits while striking out seven for the White Sox, who were coming off a four-game sweep in Minnesota when they were outscored 31-8. - - - Angels 5, Mariners 4 Carlos Perez's leadoff homer in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Los Angeles Angels to a 5-4 win over the Seattle Mariners at Angel Stadium. Perez's homer came in his major league debut, the catcher having been called up one day earlier from Triple-A Salt Lake. - - - Marlins 2, Nationals 1 Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg left after pitching three innings with some discomfort under his shoulder blade as Washington fell 2-1 to the Miami Marlins. Strasburg is slated to see a chiropractor on Wednesday and his next start could well be delayed. Miami's Mat Latos (1-3) gave up one run and two hits in 6 1/3 innings. - - - Dodgers 8, Brewers 2 Shortstop Jimmy Rollins and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez hit two-run home runs in the eighth inning and right-hander Zack Greinke struck out seven as the Los Angeles Dodgers snapped the Milwaukee Brewers' three-game winning streak with an 8-2 victory at Miller Park. Greinke (5-0) was dominant from the start, scattering two hits over eight innings. Milwaukee's only run was unearned; coming as a result of an error on center fielder Joc Pederson in the second. - - - Cardinals 7, Cubs 4 The St Louis Cardinals added to their longest winning streak in five years with a slice of major league history. Reliever Mitch Harris became the first Naval Academy grad to win an MLB game, pitching a scoreless sixth inning as St Louis dumped the Chicago Cubs 7-4 in Busch Stadium for its eighth straight victory. - - - Royals 5, Indians 3 Left-hander Jason Vargas won his second straight start and first baseman Eric Hosmer drove in four runs as the Kansas City Royals topped the Cleveland Indians 5-3. Hosmer hit a three-run homer to left in the first inning and his triple in the eighth scored left-fielder Alex Gordon, who interjected two singles and a walk. - - - Mets 3, Orioles 2 Bartolo Colon threw 7 2/3 strong innings night, and New York snapped its scoreless drought by registering three fourth-inning runs in a 3-2 victory over Baltimore. The Mets won for just the fourth time in 11 games. The Orioles lost for the second time in seven games. Colon (5-1) allowed one run on six hits and no walks while striking out nine. - - - Yankees 6, Blue Jays 3 Right-hander Michael Pineda pitched eight scoreless innings to remain undefeated and first baseman Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer as the New York Yankees held on to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays, 6-3. Pineda (4-0) held the Blue Jays to five hits and struck out six as he picked up his fourth win in six starts this season. - - - Rangers 7, Astros 1 Wandy Rodriguez allowed a solo home run in the first inning, pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the second, and then shut down the Houston Astros over his final six innings to lead the Texas Rangers to a 7-1 victory at Minute Maid Park. The Rangers (10-16) recorded consecutive wins for the first time this season thanks in large part to Rodriguez, a spring training castoff of the Atlanta Braves. - - - Reds 7, Pirates 1 Michael Lorenzen pitched one-run ball over six innings for his first major league win and Marlon Byrd drove in four runs as the Cincinnati Reds downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-1.
