High school soccer rewind: Charlotte Catholic, Marvin Ridge advance to 4A semifinals
Charlotte Catholic and Marvin Ridge will square off Tuesday for the right to play in North Carolina’s 4A state championship boys’ soccer match next weekend.
The Cougars and Mavericks advanced to the state semifinals with quarterfinal victories Saturday night.
Charlotte Catholic ended South Mecklenburg’s bid for a second straight 4A title with a come-from-behind, 2-1 victory.
And Marvin Ridge scored with 1:58 remaining in the second overtime for a 4-3 victory over previously unbeaten Myers Park.
The Cougars and Mavericks will meet at Marvin Ridge, with the match time to be announced.
Two other area teams advanced to Tuesday’s regional finals. Bradford Prep, under first-year coach Christian Thomas, won its 1A West quarterfinal, and Lincolnton won its 2A match.
South Mecklenburg (17-7-4) won five matches on the road a year ago before capturing the state title on a neutral field at the Matthews Sportsplex. This season, the 23rd-seeded Sabres were at it again, winning three in a row away from home.
And they got off to a good start Saturday night at Charlotte Catholic, as Patrick Dugan scored for the Sabres in the first half. But the 16th-seeded Cougars battled back, scoring twice in the second half. And Charlotte Catholic goalkeeper Henry Thompson made two big saves to help preserve the victory.
At Myers Park, the second-seeded Mustangs (19-1-2) fell behind 3-1 early in the second half but battled back, getting goals from Nelson Wauple and Vlad Grigoryan.
In overtime, neither team got a good scoring chance until Marvin Ridge launched a breakaway and got the winning goal with 1:58 remaining.
The Mavericks (17-4-2), seeded sixth, will be trying to even the score with Charlotte Catholic on Tuesday. The Cougars beat Marvin Ridge 3-0 on Aug. 27.
