High school hoop finals Friday, Saturday in Saint John

The New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association's Final 12 senior basketball championships are at Harbour Station in Saint John Friday and Saturday.

The tournament will feature the final twelve teams from across the province. The boys and girls teams are the winners of a series of playoffs held over the last two weeks.

"Teams have been eliminating each other, and we are down to the final two teams in each of the school divisions," said Fran McHugh, one of the officials on Information Morning Saint John.

"The schools are divided into three groups, depending on their population. So we have the smallest schools, called A, the medium–sized schools called AA, and the largest, called AAA."

In each of those categories, there is a girls and a boys final. So each game on the weekend is a championship one.

Big rivalry

The AA finalists for girls come from Woodstock and Carleton North, and it's the same two teams for the boys.

"That doesn't happen very often," said McHugh. "A big rivalry, we're looking for a big crowd from Carleton County."

In A boys, it's Harvey High School against the Fredericton Christian Academy and the Harvey girls are featured as well, playing John Caldwell.

In AAA, KV High School girls play Riverview, and in boys it's Leo Hayes from Fredericton, against Miramichi Valley.

Organizers are expecting very good crowds, as all the teams have strong followings, McHugh said.
