Yahoo Sports High school football preview 2024: Breaking down Mecklenburg County public school teams
The Observer is kicking off comprehensive high school football previews for all of the N.C. counties it covers — Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln and Union, along with teams from York and Lancaster counties in upstate South Carolina.
The previews will include breakdowns for all teams, conference predictions and a preseason all-county team.
The previews conclude today with a look at Mecklenburg County public schools.

ARDREY KELL

Outlook: The Knights have been a consistent winner, averaging eight wins over the last five seasons. This season, Ardrey Kell returns 12 starters, which should give them a chance to contend in the SoMeck 4A conference. The Knights’ offense will feature senior quarterback Gavin Adams, senior running back Kyle DeSantis and senior receiver Ben Kirsch (Elon University commit, 61 catches for 853 yards, eight touchdowns). Ardrey Kell has one of the largest and most experienced offensive lines in the area, including seniors T.J. Akinyelu (6-3, 290), Nate James (6-0, 275) and Brandon Stoner (Georgia Southern commit, 6-3, 310). The Knights’ defense is also a veteran group led by a quartet of seniors: defensive end Seth Holden, linebackers Emmanuel Beya and Parker Ludwick and defensive back Alex Gutierrez (60 tackles, four interceptions).
Interesting Note: Ardrey Kell head coach Jachym is 40-14 in his five-year tenure in charge of the Knights’ program.
BALLANTYNE RIDGE

Outlook: Ballantyne Ridge will begin its program “with a huge freshman and sophomore class from Ardrey Kell and South Mecklenburg High (primarily) with a few juniors,” according to coach Redding. The Wolves, with an average age of 14.5 years, will be one of the youngest teams in America, Redding believes.
Interesting Note: Ballantyne Ridge coach Redding is a former Ardrey Kell assistant and Berry Academy head coach.
BERRY

Outlook: The Cardinals have struggled recently, going 15-33 in the last five years. This season, Berry returns 11 starters. The Cardinals’ defense is a veteran group, led by senior Chris Gregory and juniors Ja’Shawn Shaw (46 tackles, four sacks) and Josh Watts. Meanwhile, the secondary is also experienced with seniors Patrick Goodman, Jaidyn McKinnon, and junior Elijah Britt returning. The Berry offense is inexperienced overall and will need junior quarterback Justin Williams to have a breakout year. Williams should have good protection with senior offensive lineman Herman Ekpenyoung and Josh Jordan back in the lineup.
Interesting Note: Berry’s last winning season came in 2011, when the Cardinals went 7-4.
BUTLER

Outlook: A new era begins at Butler, with longtime coach Brian Hales out and former Julius Chambers coach Glenwood Ferebee in. The Bulldogs return 14 starters from a team that went 12-2 and advanced to the 4A state quarterfinals. The Butler offense, which averaged 40 points per game last year, should be potent once again with senior quarterback Zach Lawrence (University of Massachusetts commit, 1,900 yards passing, 24 touchdowns) returning. Lawrence has weapons all over the field, including senior running back Jayden Williams (1,324 yards rushing, 20 touchdowns, four receiving touchdowns) and senior receiver Dequadre Currence (48 catches for 689 yards, eight touchdowns). Seniors Gabe Heard-Hernandez (all-conference), and Caleb Scull (team captain) are back to lead the offensive line. The Butler defense, which allowed 11.7 points per game last year, returns senior defensive tackle Jadyn Farmer (Charlotte 49ers’ commit, 64 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, three sacks), senior linebacker Ian Coleman (51 tackles, six sacks) and senior defensive back Jeremy Nixon (63 tackles, two interceptions).
Interesting Note: Former Julius Chambers coach Ferebee comes back to the high-school ranks. He most recently was director of high school relations at Virginia Tech. Ferebee won back-to-back 4A state titles with Chambers in 2019 and 2020.
CAROLINA BEARCATS

Outlook: After not fielding a team because of low numbers, the Carolina Bearcats are back into action this season. The Bearcats’ offense will lean on junior receivers Jaylen Mack, Zion Gomes and sophomore Jaden Macon along with sophomore quarterback Thomas James. The Bearcats’ defensive front will be key with junior Joshua Jenkins and Cristian Keys, playing big roles. Meanwhile, Gomes, James, Mack and Macon give the secondary experience. The Carolina Bearcats were 11-18 combined from 2020-22, and will look to stay near .500 again this season.
Interesting Note: Carolina Bearcats’ head coach Tony Ravenell is in his fifth season as the head coach after spending eight years as an assistant for the same program.
CHARLOTTE CATHOLIC

Outlook: The Cougars have been consistent, averaging nine wins per season over last five years. However, Charlotte Catholic will have to adjust to its second new head coach in as many years with Charlotte 49ers’ assistant Keith Emery now taking over the program. The Charlotte Catholic offense will return to its historically run-heavy offense with senior running backs Jake Anderson (707 yards rushing, 13 touchdowns) and Hugh O’Brien getting the ball behind senior offensive linemen Conor Clendenin and Thomas Wakefield. The Cougars’ also have a capable quarterback in senior Charlie Smith (Harvard commit, 1,603 yards passing 15 touchdowns last year). The Catholic defense is younger but returns junior defensive end Dominic Basrawala, and senior end Hunter Chromy. Meanwhile, the junior trio of Jon Fijalkowski (four interceptions), Carter Garnett, and Lukas Lipinski, provide experience in the secondary.
Interesting Note: New Charlotte Catholic head coach Keith Emery is only the fourth Cougars’ head coach in the last 50 years, joining Jim Oddo, Mike Brodowicz and Matthew Reilly.
COMMUNITY SCHOOL OF DAVIDSON

The offense starts with senior Brandon Albert (Lafayette College commit), who rushed for 1,195 yards and 20 touchdowns, plus 95 catches for 1,012 and 12 more scores. Pine Lake Prep transfer, senior quarterback Jake Johnson, and senior receiver Oliver Morris, should also play key roles. The Spartans’ defense, who allowed only 16 points per game last year, will be strong up front, led by senior defensive ends Ryan Connotillo (Pine Lake Prep transfer, 64 tackles, 16 sacks) and Morris (nine sacks). Seniors Brandon Albert (96 tackles, three interceptions), Micah McCoy (43 tackles, five interceptions), Stef Morgan (42 tackles, three interceptions) and sophomore Zach Albert (78 tackles) all return in the secondary.
Interesting Note: Community School of Davidson has posted four straight winning seasons, going 34-10 in the span.

Outlook: The Cardinals have been more than respectable, going 11-10 overall, in their first two years as a program. This year, Corvian Charter returns 13 starters from a team that went 6-6, including getting the first playoff win in school history. The Cardinals’ offense is in good hands with dual threat senior quarterback Andre Jackson (1,326 yards passing, 17 touchdowns, 624 yards rushing, 13 touchdowns last year). Jackson has plenty of help with senior running back Cameron Johnson (600 yards rushing, six touchdowns), receiver Esaias Caves (533 yards receiving, seven touchdowns) and an experienced offensive line, including junior James Dukes and senior Christiaan Evans II. The Cardinals’ defense is strong up front with senior defensive ends Douglas Quarles (46 tackles, 15 sacks, 16 tackles for loss) and Adrian Scott (50 tackles, nine sacks, 13 tackles for loss), putting constant pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Meanwhile, Jackson also leads the secondary with his ball-hawking skills that produced 54 tackles, four interceptions, 14 pass break-ups and five forced fumbles.
Interesting Note: Corvian Charter won 38-28 at Draughn in the first round of the 1A state playoffs last year to earn its first playoff victory in their first year in a NCHSAA conference (Catawba Shores’ 1A/2A). The Cardinals were a freelance team in 2022.

With only seven starters returning, the Eagles’ offense will revolve around the all-around abilities of junior James Bailey III, who line up at running back, receiver, and may even see some time at quarterback after serving as the starter last year. The offensive line is solid with senior Hayden Oxendine and junior Chima Arum back. The East Mecklenburg defense will look to senior linebackers Chase Storey (40 tackles) and Ben Witmer to pair with defensive linemen Arum and Oxendine to lead the front seven. Meanwhile, Bailey and junior Jasiah Phillips give the secondary experience.
Interesting Note: East Mecklenburg’s last winning season came in 2009, when it went 9-6 under former Coach Greg Hill.
GARINGER

The Wildcats’ offense, which scored 48 points in 10 games last season, will feature senior quarterback Sebion Smith, senior running back Kaymen Carroll, junior offensive lineman Angel Vasquez and sophomore Z’Kuario Woods.
Interesting Note: First-year Garinger head coach DeAngelo Lloyd is a former Independence High All-American who also played at University of Tennessee, where he won the national championship (1998) and was a part of two Southeastern Conference titles in his college career.

Meanwhile, the Titans’ defense has experience with senior linebackers Jamarious Moseley and Edmund McClure along with all-conference senior defensive lineman Cam Dixon.

This season, the Huskies return 13 starters. The Hough offense is centered around senior quarterback Trey Blakeney (Austin Peay commit, 1,543 yards passing, 19 touchdowns last year), who will look to get the ball to senior running back Jycen Anciso, and receivers Sean Brady (449 yards receiving, five touchdowns) and Syir Sutton. Senior Kiande Marsh (Old Dominion University commit) is back to lead the offensive line. The Huskies’ defense is also a senior-laden unit with with defensive end Cameron Cyr (38 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, five sacks) and linebacker Ayden Bell (56 tackles) leading the front seven. Meanwhile, the entire secondary is back including seniors Morgan Linton (Austin Peay State commit), Kar’mel Quick (Lenoir-Rhyne commit), Reggie Rainer (Charlotte 49ers’ commit) and junior Samari Matthews (Power 4 conference recruit).
Interesting Note: Hough junior defensive back Samari Matthews a four-star recruit, who has multiple scholarship offers including Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn and Clemson.

The Patriots’ offense is loaded with senior quarterback Justin Little (2,722 yards passing, 29 touchdowns, nine touchdown runs) back to lead an offense that averaged 38 points per game last year. Little will have plenty of help with junior running back Jayden Jones (1,830 yards rushing, 19 touchdowns), senior receiver Brian Crowder (553 yards, five touchdowns receiving) and senior lineman Sidig Cabaniss-Ali all back in the lineup. The Independence defense also has multiple playmakers in the front seven, including juniors linebackers Dallas Brannon (147 tackles), Nick Reddish (95 tackles, four interceptions) and senior defensive end Cam Martin (85 tackles, five sacks).

The Myers Park offense will be put in the hands of senior quarterback Jared Lockhart (Porter Ridge transfer, 1,321 yards passing, 12 touchdowns, nine rushing touchdowns), who has plenty of weapons from running backs in senior R.J. Alexander (929 yards rushing, eight touchdowns) and Josh Falzarano (537 yards rushing) to receivers in junior Brody Keefe (41 catches for 559 yards and 11 touchdowns) and M.A. Skanes. The Mustangs’ defense begins up front with junior defensive end Rodney Dunham (Power 5 recruit, 58 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, four sacks). Outlook: The Hawks have been up and down of late, going 15-17 in the last three seasons. This season, West Mecklenburg returns 19 starters. The Hawks’ offense will benefit from the return of sophomore quarterback R’Maunni Watson (825 yards passing, seven touchdowns), seniors running back Mark Foster (596 yards rushing) and senior receiver Jayd’n Jenkins. The strength of the Hawks’ offense is on the line, where all-conference junior center Jorquis Broome and seniors Cam Gibson and Demarion Williams all return. The West Mecklenburg secondary is loaded with experience as seniors in Foster (117 tackles, three interceptions), Brian Thompson (two interceptions) and juniors Marcus Myers (70 tackles) and Xavier Porter (two interceptions) will lead the unit. The Hawks’ defensive front will also be solid with senior defensive tackle Gibson (39 tackles) and junior, defensive end Lavarus Hines (51 tackles) anchoring the group.
Interesting Note: West Mecklenburg junior center Jorquis Broome led the Hawks with 49 pancake blocks last season.
