High school basketball rewind: Charlotte-area teams advance to holiday finals

A bevy of Charlotte-area teams advanced Saturday to post-Christmas holiday tournament championship games set for Monday.

A few more won championships Saturday night:

At Marvin Ridge High School on Monday, Victory Christian will play Queen’s Grant Charter in the Phenom Hoops’ New Year’s Bash championship.

Victory Christian beat Hickory Ridge 82-62 in a semifinal Saturday night, led by 24 points from Justyn Whitfield, 14 from Carlos Marshall and 12 from Landon Johnson. Queen’s Grant Charter advanced by downing Hunter Huss 66-47. Chase Smith led the Stallions with 24 points, 14 rebounds and four assists. Zalyir Phillips scored 14 points for Huss.

Ardrey Kell advanced to the boys’ final of its own holiday event, beating arch rival Providence 60-52 Saturday. The Knights (8-1) led 34-21 at halftime and won, paced by 15 points from Brett Freeman, 12 from Braden Suggs and 11 from Matthew Craft.

The Knights will face The Rock (FL) in the finals. The Rock beat Cuthbertson in its semifinal game Saturday.

The girls’ final will match Stuart Cramer and Hunter Huss, a pair of Gaston County teams. Cramer beat Hough 70-48 and Huss beat Ardrey Kell 61-40.

The Observer’s top-ranked boys’ team, Lake Norman, suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, falling 87-67 to Milton (GA) in the quarterfinals of The Classic, in Bristol, Tennessee. Milton (9-1) got 32 points and six assists from Josh Dixon. Teammate Dhvanish Veghela hit all five of his three-point shots in the second quarter, when Milton erased a 21-20 Lake Norman lead after one quarter and took a 45-35 halftime edge.

Mooresville (11-2) beat Rocky River 87-76 at the North Iredell holiday event, led by double-figure scoring from Nolan Ericson (16 points), Dylan Clark (16), Christian Wilson (13) and Eian Bailey (11).

In the girls’ bracket, Rocky River (5-2) won its third straight game, beating Statesville 46-29 to advance to Monday’s finals. The Ravens will play North Iredell, which beat Community School of Davidson 60-47.

At the East Lincoln Winter Jam, Hough beat Queen City 3A/4A conference rival Mallard Creek 42-37 to advance to Monday’s championship game. Hough’s Evan Otto made 4 of 5 3-point shots, scored 18 points and had seven rebounds.

East Lincoln’s girls will face West Cabarrus in the girls’ final Monday. West Cabarrus beat Christ The King, from Huntersville, 39-37. East Lincoln got 29 points from Taniya Thomas and 18 from Emma Montanari in a 63-22 rout of Central Cabarrus.

At the Mountaineer Classic in Kings Mountain, Ashbrook beat Palisades 68-45. Ashbrook (9-2) won its seventh straight game. The Green Wave led Palisades 36-32 in the third quarter, but Isaac Byers scored on a layup and then a three-point field goal, giving Ashbrook a 41-32 lead. The Green Wave pulled away after that.

It will be an all-Gaston County final Monday, as Gaston Day downed Kings Mountain 66-59 in the other championship bracket semifinal.

Cannon School, the defending N.C. 4A private school champion, dropped an 87-51 decision to Virginia powerhouse Princess Anne in the semifinals of the Wonderland Bracket at the John Wall Classic in Raleigh. Princess Anne (9-0) got 33 points from Micah Ojo. Cannon School dropped to 13-5.

And in the championship game of the Frances Pulley Bracket at the John Wall Classic in Raleigh, the Mallard Creek girls lost to Maryland’s Bullis School 77-58.

Dylan Clark, Mooresville: Clark had 16 points, seven rebounds and five blocks in an 87-76 win over Rocky River in the North Iredell Christmas tournament semifinals.

Ginny Anne Dumont, Providence Day: Dumont had a team-high 14 points in a 44-22 win over New Hanover at the Hoggard Holiday Classic. The Chargers beat a 4A public school team for the second straight game and won for the ninth game in a row.

Ahmari Hicks, East Mecklenburg: Hicks led his team to a 77-54 win over Sweet 16 No. 16 Carolina International at the Phenom Hoops’ New Year’s Bash at Marvin Ridge High School. Hicks had a game-high 28 points, five rebounds. Teammate Jordan Buzzard added 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals.

Jordan Watford, Columbus Parker, Lancaster: In a 96-82 win over Cannon in a showcase game at the Phenom Hoops’ New Year’s Bash, both players had 29 points. Watford added six rebounds, four assists and a steal.Pakrer had 10 rebounds and two assists.

Justyn Whitfield, Victory Christian: Whitfield helped power Victory Christian to a 82-62 win over Hickory Ridge in the Phenom Hoops’ New Year’s Bash semifinals. After going for 32 points, five assists and four rebounds in a first round game, Whitfield added 24 points, six assists and five rebounds Saturday.

East Mecklenburg 77, Carolina International 54: East Mecklenburg knocked off the No. 16 ranked team in The Observer’s Sweet 16 regional poll behind 28 points, five rebounds from Ahmari Hicks and 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals from Jordan Buzzard. East Meck (7-3) led 22-10 after the first quarter and never gave up much of its lead.

Carolina International (9-2), a 1A charter, lost for the second straight to an unranked 4A public. It lost 75-71 to Hickory Ridge Friday. KJ Shouse led Carolina International Saturday with 25 points, four rebounds and two steals.

Independence 55, Catawba Ridge 31: Independence bounced back from Friday’s close loss to S.C. power Lancaster with an easy win over another S.C. opponent. The Patriots (10-2) — led by 12 points and five rebounds from Jaxson Neely — have won four of their last five. Catawba Ridge (4-8) got 13 points and 11 rebounds from 6-10 junior Mark Caslaru.

Lancaster 96, Cannon School 82: After starting the season 0-6 under new coach Jim Baker, who had led Central Cabarrus to back-to-back 3A public school state championships, the Cougars (6-7) had won six in a row coming into this game with a S.C. state championship contender. Cannon led early and kept it range, led by 27 points, four rebounds and two steals from Kenan Dixon and 23 points, seven rebounds from Evan Ingram.

Lancaster (10-1) won its fifth straight game behind 58 combined points, 16 rebounds and six assists from guards Jordan Watford and Columbus Parker. Jacarey Ballard (20 points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals) also had a strong game.

Marvin Ridge 69, Central Cabarrus 48: Marvin Ridge (4-9) snapped a five-game losing streak with the big win over Central (4-6). DJ Smith’s 10 points led Marvin Ridge. Central Cabarrus got 12 from Cayden Smith, who has made 10 3-points in his last two games, including three Saturday.

Piedmont 59, Legion Collegiate 51: Piedmont won for the third time in four games, improving to 5-7 overall as it continues to improve from an 0-3 start to the season. In Saturday’s showcase game, Bennett Church had 16 points, three assists and two rebound. Teammates Bryan Little (12 points, nine rebounds, two steals) and Graham Blackman (12 points, five rebounds, two assists) had strong games. Isaiah Worley (19 points, two rebounds) led Legion Collegiate (3-12).

South Point boys, girls win Red Raider Winter Rumble

South Point’s boys and girls won the Red Raider Winter Rumble at South Point Saturday.

The boys beat Metrolina Christian 41-38. South Point (6-4) won its second straight game.

The Red Raiders’ girls beat Catawba Ridge 51-26, powered by 21 points from Toney Milton, plus 12 from Amya Graham. South Point improved to 8-2. Catawba Ridge is 5-7.

The Red Raiders lead 15-10 at halftime, but outscored Catawba Ridge 26-6 in a decisive third quarter.

Palisades beat Highland Tech’s girls 53-27 for third place. Highland Tech’s boys beat East Gaston 59-49 for third.

North Lincoln sweeps at Peoples Bank

At the Peoples Bank Holiday tournament at Bandys High School, North Lincoln’s boys and girls won the championship, beating host Bandys High in both games.

North Lincoln’s girls beat the host team 68-52 to win the championship. North Lincoln (9-1) won its ninth straight game.

North Lincoln’s boys (6-4) won their third straight game, 78-70, handing Bandys (9-2) its second loss of the season. The Knights led 67-44 after three quarters, before Bandys rallied in the final eight minutes. Kellen Carr (21 points) and Ben Heavner (19) led North Lincoln.
