Liverpool’s interest in a ‘high-level’ winger has him discussing the move with his Euro 2024 teammates. Will the Reds actually sign Anthony Gordon, though?

The Telegraph reports that Anthony Gordon was discussing a move to Liverpool with his England teammates last month. It came as the Reds and Newcastle United held talks about the winger.

Newcastle faced the Premier League spending rules deadline at the end of June, needing to balance their books. The best way of doing that was by selling players and Gordon was allegedly on their list.

They offered him to Liverpool but a deal couldn't be struck. Gordon's agent pushed hard for it, though, to the point where the player was talking about it openly with England colleagues.

But it appears the deal was never actually close. Liverpool never made a bid and their interest was 'lukewarm', says the report. On top of that, the figures the Reds discussed wouldn't have made a significant dent in Newcastle's PSR problems.

Liverpool didn't come close to Gordon

Liverpool don't actually have a need for Gordon, even if his arrival would be a positive one. Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo are all comfortable on the left wing. At least two of them would call it their natural position.

And so spending a large amount of money on Gordon doesn't actually make sense. But we'd always welcome a player who ticks the homegrown boxes - let alone one who's a local, boyhood fan.

Unless someone like Diaz leaves, though, we're not sure how this one gets done. Newcastle can no longer affect their PSR judgement with a sale, either, so their position of desperation has gone. The Reds would need to make a genuinely enticing offer - and we're not sure they will.

Maybe Gordon tries to force Newcastle's hand, but even if he does, Liverpool still may not front the cash required.
