Higgins Indicted In Crash That Claimed The Lives Of The Gaudreau Brothers

Sean Higgins, the man accused of being drunk while driving his SUV and killing Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, was formally indicted yesterday in a New Jersey court.

Higgins was indicted on two counts of first-degree aggravated manslaughter (extreme indifference), two counts of second-degree reckless vehicular homicide, second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal accident, and fourth-degree tampering with physical evidence in the fatal incident.

Higgins could get a sentence of 10 to 30 years for each aggravated manslaughter charge. The reckless vehicular homicide charges could bring a 10-year sentence per count.

Higgins was also cited for driving while intoxicated, consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle, having an open alcohol container in a vehicle, improper passing, reckless driving, and making an unsafe lane change.

Higgins’ blood alcohol concentration was measured at 0.087% on the day of the incident. New Jersey's legal limit of 0.08%. He failed a field sobriety test on scene. The body cam footage of his test and subsequent arrest has since been made public.

Prosecutors also said he admitted trying to hide beer cans after hitting the Brothers.

Higgins will stay in jail until an outcome has been determined in the case.

The Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, and fans of both teams continue to grieve the passing of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew. Both teams have played better than anyone expected this season and are undoubtedly playing for their fallen brother's memory.

What's Next - The Blue Jackets are back home on Thursday to play the Washington Capitals.
