EDMONTON - In the NHL, no coach on the bench or the ice is safe from getting hit by a flying puck or stick. Edmonton Oilers assistant coach Paul Coffey learned that the hard way.

At Wednesday's Oilers practice, right winger Connor Brown took a shot on net, but the puck was deflected and hit Coffey in the chin. He had to get treatment as he bled from the chin.

Brown skated a hot lap as his 'punishment' for his deflected shot, and Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch gave an update on Coffey after practice.

"Might have gotten some stitches," Knoblauch told reporters about the defense coach. "He's got a bandage on his chin, but he'll persevere and be ready for tomorrow."

It might not make his chin hurt less, but Coffey joins the list of NHL coaches who had to tough out a puck or stick to the face.

Just last January, then-New Jersey Devils bench boss Lindy Ruff missed the third period of a game after a puck struck him in the face. There's also the story of the late Hockey Hall of Famer Pat Quinn having two black eyes when coaching the Toronto Maple Leafs. Those are just the start.
