Henry Clay star, 8 other Lexington players among high school soccer All-State honorees

Kentucky boys and girls high school soccer’s respective coaches associations recently named their All-State Teams with top honors going to nine Lexington players.

In addition, Henry Clay’s Marco Messerli was named boys offensive player of the year by the Kentucky High School Soccer Coaches Association.

Messerli scored 20 goals and had a team-high 18 assists for the Blue Devils, who on Saturday captured the school’s fourth boys state championship with a 6-1 win over Louisville Collegiate.

Blue Devils head coach Jason Behler was named large school coach of the year.

Henry Clay’s Connor Taylor and Braden Cundiff joined Messerli on the first team, as did Frederick Douglass goalkeeper Delfin Iteriteka, Lafayette’s Max Jacobs and Paul Laurence Dunbar’s Walter Claudio and J.T. Martin.

Two Lexington girls players — Henry Clay’s Ava Wilson and Douglass’ Maddi Merryweather — earned first-team All-State honors from the Kentucky High School Girls Soccer Coaches Association.

Other boys individual awards went to Collegiate’s Josh Rairick for defensive player of the year and teammate Crew Hartlage for goalkeeper of the year. Their coach, Chad Wozniak, was named private school coach of the year. Murray’s Jared Rosa was named small school coach of the year.

The girls coaches do not give additional individual honors like the boys do, but they do have an honorable mention list, which the boys do not. All-state honorees received their awards at Saturday’s state championship games in Lexington.

Both the boys and girls associations will hold All-State games pitting their East honorees against the West’s on Saturday.

The Boys All-State Games will be held at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville with the Second Team game kicking off at 9 a.m. and the First Team game at 11 a.m.

The Girls All-State Game will kick off at 5 p.m. Saturday at Central Hardin High School in Cecilia.
