Tottenham kicked off their pre-season schedule with a thumping 5-1 win over Hearts at Tynecastle. FT: Hearts 1-5 Tottenham
20:54 , Matt Verri
There is the full-time whistle, much to the delight of the Hearts players.
A perfect start to pre-season for Tottenham.
Hearts 1-5 Tottenham
20:53 , Matt Verri
89 mins: Scarlett in behind, goes round the goalkeeper.... fires high and wide from a tight angle.
Hearts 1-5 Tottenham
20:52 , Matt Verri
88 mins: Wave after wave of Tottenham attacks.
Referee is going to take mercy on Hearts and blow up right on 90 minutes, you’d imagine.
GOAL! Hearts 1-5 Tottenham | Ashley Phillips 85'
20:49 , Matt Verri
It’s five!
Corner taken short, eventually whipped in and Scarlett’s header is saved.
Parried back out, though, and Phillips turns it home.
Hearts 1-4 Tottenham
20:46 , Matt Verri
83 mins: Three-on-two for Spurs on the counter, Hearts are really open.
Played through to Scarlett, but he went too early with his run and the offside flag goes up.
Hearts 1-4 Tottenham
20:44 , Matt Verri
81 mins: Bergvall slides in, that’s late though and the whistle goes.
He’s not been afraid to get stuck in, to put it mildly...
Hearts 1-4 Tottenham
20:40 , Matt Verri
77 mins: Hearts sitting deeper and deeper... think they’ve had enough of this match.
Spence in down the right, low ball into the middle and Veliz fires over as he slides in.
Hearts 1-4 Tottenham
20:37 , Matt Verri
74 mins: All these Spurs players on the pitch are keen to make an impression - not great news for Hearts.
Could be a long 15 minutes for the hosts.
GOAL! Hearts 1-4 Tottenham | Djed Spence 72'
20:35 , Matt Verri
It’s four!
Werner in so much space on the left, drives on the outside and plays the ball across the face of goal.
Spence slides in to turn it home at the back post.
Hearts 1-3 Tottenham
20:31 , Matt Verri
67 mins: Lankshear impressed but he is given only 20 minutes.
Veliz is on to replace the teenager.
GOAL! Hearts 1-3 Tottenham | Mikey Moore 66'
20:29 , Matt Verri
The 16-year-old gets on the scoresheet!
Sharp from Moore in the box, onto his left foot and then cuts back onto his right, dragging a low finish into the bottom corner.
Hearts 1-2 Tottenham
20:28 , Matt Verri
64 mins: Werner with a loose pass - he’s not had a great 20 minutes or so since coming up.
Bergvall fairly quiet, too, but he’s tried to make an impact off the ball. Bundling into the challenges.
Hearts 1-2 Tottenham
20:23 , Matt Verri
60 mins: It is a real mess from Hearts near enough every time they play out from the back.
Spurs win it back again, massive chance for Werner but his shot is blocked.
Lankshear, meanwhile, has decided he’s going to shoot whenever he has the ball. Distance or angle irrelevant.
Hearts 1-2 Tottenham
20:21 , Matt Verri
57 mins: Hearts have space as they push for another equaliser.
Cross is charged down by Phillips, who does the usual ‘I’m definitely winded’ as the handball shouts go up.
GOAL! Hearts 1-2 Tottenham | Will Lankshear 55'
20:19 , Matt Verri
Spurs back in front!
First bit of quality since half-time and it’s brought the goal.
Spence drives forward, flicks a pass through to Lankshear and it’s a cool finish into the bottom corner.
Hearts 1-1 Tottenham
20:17 , Matt Verri
54 mins: Spence pounces on a loose pass, plays it out to Lankshear but his cross is charged down.
Already a lot less pace in the match since all the changes.
Hearts 1-1 Tottenham
20:15 , Matt Verri
51 mins: The few hundred seagulls haven’t gone anywhere. They are all a long goal kick away from disaster.
Spurs back to controlling possession, but they haven’t really got going yet since half-time. No threat at the moment.
Hearts 1-1 Tottenham
20:11 , Matt Verri
48 mins: Right, here is Spurs’ lineup for the second-half.
Not exactly a flying start...

GOAL! Hearts 1-1 Tottenham | Lawrence Shankland 46'
20:09 , Matt Verri
First though... a goal!
Emerson is one of those on and he’s given the balla way in his own box.
Passed to Shankland, who fires home from ten yards out.
That took 30 seconds.
Back underway!
20:08 , Matt Verri
Up and running in the second-half.
Spurs have basically changed their entire side - confirmation of those changes shortly.
Watch: Johnson gives Tottenham the lead
19:57 , Matt Verri
It’s lovely from Kulusevski to play Maddison in, and from there it’s all fairly routine.
Real quality for the one goal in the match so far.
Kulusevski ➡️ Maddison ➡️ Johnson.
Beautiful 😘#HEATOT // 0-1— Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) July 17, 2024
HT: Hearts 0-1 Tottenham
19:51 , Matt Verri
That’ll do for the first-half, no added time.
Spurs have been sloppy on the ball at times, as you’d expect in their first real pre-season match, but still enough positives.
Some nice football, particularly out wide, while Gray has been really impressive at the back.
Hearts 0-1 Tottenham
19:47 , Matt Verri
42 mins: Chances are coming thick and fast now.
Son with the flick through, Porro in on goal but he fires over inside the box.
Tried so hard to get it onto his right foot and curl it towards the far corner, should probably have just shot with his left.
Hearts 0-1 Tottenham
19:46 , Matt Verri
41 mins: And it should be 2-0 almost immediately.
Solomon on the left, it’s a great ball whipped low into the middle.
Son is free, a good first touch and it’s a goal. Instead it bounces off him and behind.
GOAL! Hearts 0-1 Tottenham | Brennan Johnson 39'
19:45 , Matt Verri
Spurs take the lead!
Maddison gets in behind, ball fired across the face of goal from the byline and Johnson turns it home from a few yards out.
Lovely one-two between Maddison and Kulusevski in the build-up.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:44 , Matt Verri
38 mins: Spurs are getting some joy out wide, but the final ball hasn’t been good enough. Johnson’s low cross turned behind.
It’s a short corner, cleared away as Donley clips a really dangerous ball in.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:42 , Matt Verri
37 mins: Hearts should be in front.
Taylor gets into space down the right, he whips a great ball into the wall.
Tagawa is completely free, six yards out and he barely makes contact. Ball flicks wide. Had to score.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:42 , Matt Verri
36 mins: Another perfectly timed challenge from Gray as he slides in.
This one so strong that he has punctured the ball and the referee calls for a new one.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:39 , Matt Verri
34 mins: Or not. Halkett is on to replace Kent at centre-back.
Spurs win another corner, again taken short.
Solomon eventually runs into a dead end and Hearts win it back. Has a short corner ever worked?
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:37 , Matt Verri
32 mins: Bit of a delay here.
Kent took that free-kick in the face and stayed down, he’s being checked over for potential concussion.
Looks like he’s going to be coming back on.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:34 , Matt Verri
29 mins: Hearts again play around at the back, Hearts again lose it at the back. Devlin robbed.
Son is completely free, but Maddison is wiped out by Devlin as he flicks the ball inside.
Free-kick just outside the box. Maddison to take... straight into the wall.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:32 , Matt Verri
27 mins: Spurs’ best chance, lovely move and it ends with Son having an effort saved by Gordon.
The Tottenham captain was clean through on goal, after a lovely reverse pass from Kulusevski, but Son couldn’t finish.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:29 , Matt Verri
24 mins: Maddison eventually back up on his feet - he’s going to continue.
One more of those challenges from Devlin and Postecoglou will be on the pitch dealing with him.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:28 , Matt Verri
22 mins: Devlin slides in and catches Maddison late, painful one on the ankle.
That’s the second time the Hearts midfielder has gone clattering into someone already.
Maddison needing treatment - would have been a yellow if this wasn’t pre-season.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:27 , Matt Verri
21 mins: It’s all Hearts at the moment.
Skipp gets himself into an awful mess trying to see the ball out of play, Taylor robs him.
Crossed in, Tagawa with the volley and it’s just wide.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:25 , Matt Verri
19 mins: Brilliant save!
Austin called into action and it’s a superb save from close range.
Spurs, believe it or not, make a mess of defending a corner. Falls for Oda and from six yards out his header is tipped over.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:23 , Matt Verri
17 mins: Maddison turns inside, back outside, inside again... and curls an effort comfortably wide.
Few team-mates would have preferred a pass there.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:20 , Matt Verri
14 mins: Gray plays it back to Austin, who on his goal line wants absolutely no part of it. Can’t get it out for a corner soon enough... not exactly a picture of calmness.
Corner comes to nothing, so all ends well for Spurs.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:18 , Matt Verri
12 mins: Gray has already had to slide in a couple of times at the back, did so well on both occasions.
At the other end, Spurs are getting into space down their right.
Son makes the run in behind, Johnson tries to slide him in but the ball runs straight out and behind for a goal-kick.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:14 , Matt Verri
9 mins: Maddison does well in midfield, Son in space 25 yards out and tries his luck. Shot is blocked.
There’s not much in the way of good defending going on, at either end. Just what we want to see.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:13 , Matt Verri
7 mins: Good news for Spurs... Hearts are trying to play out from the back. Trying the key word there.
Oyegoke loses it, Kulusevski gets the ball on the edge of the area but can’t get a shot away in time.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:11 , Matt Verri
5 mins: The hosts are looking dangerous when they get forward.
Plenty of bodies up in attack, ball squared to Devlin in the box and he fires over. Decent chance.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:10 , Matt Verri
4 mins: Hearts can break as Spurs give it away, they have space to counter into.
Tagawa played in on the right, but the offside flag goes up to swiftly halt his progress.
Hearts 0-0 Tottenham
19:08 , Matt Verri
2 mins: So 2,000 away fans... think there might be as many seagulls in attendance.
Away from matters in the sky, Spurs dominating possession as you’d expect. Not sure Hearts have had a kick.
KICK-OFF!
19:05 , Matt Verri
Few tributes ahead of kick-off, so we’re a bit behind schedule.
Up and running now!
18:59 , Matt Verri
Here are the players - decent crowd in this evening.
Apparently around 2,000 Tottenham supporters have made the trip up to Scotland.
Ange Postecoglou and Steven Naismith having a good old chat as they walk up the tunnel together.
Here we go!
18:55 , Matt Verri
Players are in the tunnel, will be out onto the pitch very shortly.
It’s about five minutes since Euro 2024 finished, but the pre-season fixtures for Premier League clubs have swiftly arrived.
We go again.
Pre-match thoughts from the Hearts camp

Busy summer ahead...
18:36 , Matt Verri
Tottenham face QPR this weekend, before their focus shifts to their pre-season tours abroad.
They travel to Japan and South Korea, facing Vissel Kobe and a K-League XI before then taking on Bayern Munich in Seoul.
And, because playing Bayern is so much fun, there will be a second Harry Kane derby a week later, with that match in north London.

Spurs turn down Emerson offer
18:20 , Matt Verri
Tottenham have rejected an £8.4m (€10m) bid from AC Milan for defender Emerson Royal, who is valued at closer to £16.8m (€20m).
Milan's offer for the Brazilian, which was submitted both verbally and in writing, was rejected by Spurs and there has been no contact between the clubs since.
Spurs are open to selling the 25-year-old who is not a first-choice under head coach Ange Postecoglou, while Emerson has said he wants regular football to force his way into Brazil's 2026 World Cup squad.
"I have to look for new club or, if I stay at Tottenham, have a good proposal to play," he told Brazilian TV last week.
Borussia Dortmund are also interested in the full-back, who joined Spurs from Barcelona in a £25m deal in the summer of 2021.
Attacking side from Spurs!
18:12 , Matt Verri
It looks to be Gray and Skipp as the centre-back partnership for Tottenham tonight.
Maddison and Kulusevski in midfield, in front of Bissouma, with Johnson and Solomon the two wingers and Son leading the line.
We should get about 15 goals... at both ends.

Defoe confirms Spurs exit
17:49 , Matt Verri
Jermain Defoe has confirmed he will leave his coaching role at Tottenham to focus on the next step in his career.
The 41-year-old former Spurs striker brought an end to his playing career in March 2022 and began his transition into coaching later that summer. Defoe worked across the U17 to U21 squads at Spurs.
“For the past two seasons I have thoroughly enjoyed my coaching time at THFC,” said Defoe on Instagram.
“Today I leave this incredible club, and I want to say thank you to all the amazing people in the building who have helped me learn and grow.
“It has been a pleasure to achieve so much at Spurs including reaching UEFA A coaching status which was always an ambition of mine following my playing career.
“Spurs will always hold a special place in my heart and the fans already know how much the club means to me.
“However, now is the right time for me to move on and shape the rest of my coaching and managerial career, nevertheless I will forever remember my time at Spurs fondly.”

Postecoglou for England
17:41 , Matt Verri
Reports this evening suggesting that Ange Postecoglou is on the FA’s list of targets as they look to appoint the next England manager.
The Telegraph report that the Tottenham boss is being considered as a possible replacement for Gareth Southgate.
So is every single other manager (maybe not Sam Allardyce), it would appear, so wouldn’t worry too much Spurs fans...

Spurs begin summer with big win
17:25 , Matt Verri
New signings Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray both played as Tottenham on Saturday kicked off their pre-season with a 7-2 win over Cambridge United in a behind-closed-doors friendly.
A first-half hat-trick from Brennan Johnson and a double from Heung-min Son, with by likes of Pedro Porro, Yves Bissouma, Dejan Kulusevski and Manor Solomon also involved, had Spurs cruising at the break.
There was plenty of rotation from both teams, with manager Ange Postecoglou using two completely different teams in each half.
Teenagers Bergvall and Gray got their first minutes of the summer in the second half, the former in midfield alongside James Maddison and Oliver Skipp and supporting Timo Werner. Gray lined up at right-back.
With a few first-team stars still away on international duty, there were plenty of academy prospects on show, with Jamie Donley, Tyrese Hall, George Abbott, Luca Gunter, and Mikey Moore all believed to be involved.
Bergvall shirt number confirmed
17:15 , Matt Verri
Tottenham have handed Lucas Bergvall the No15 shirt ahead of his debut season with the club.
The 18-year-old Swede has officially joined Spurs after an £8.5million deal was struck for his signature in February with Djurgarden following his rapid rise in his home country.
And Spurs’ allocation of one of the more senior remaining squad numbers suggests Ange Postecoglou will hand Bergvall a serious chance in the first-team in 2024-25.
The last Tottenham player to wear the No15 was Eric Dier, who held the shirt for almost a decade.

Standard Sport prediction
17:06 , Matt Verri
The score is never important in these games, especially for a first run out of the summer, but it can usually provide plenty of goals.
Expect an entertaining game at Tynecastle Stadium, with plenty of players getting minutes under their belts.
Tottenham to win, 4-2.
Tottenham team news
16:58 , Matt Verri
Spurs gave plenty of players their first minutes of pre-season in a behind-closed-doors win over Cambridge on Saturday, including run outs for summer signings Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall.
Ange Postecoglou will have most of his first-team squad available, with just defensive trio Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin on international duty.
It remains to be seen if the likes of out-of-favour players Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon will join the travelling party.
Hearts team news
