‘We haven’t won anything yet’ – Chelsea remain grounded after victory at Liverpool says Bompastor

Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor said that her side haven’t won anything yet after their 3-0 victory over Liverpool at The Totally Wicked Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Mayra Ramírez, Guro Reiten and Aggie Beever-Jones helped The Blues to record their sixth consecutive league win.

When speaking to the media after the match, Chelsea head coach Bompastor said that she was pleased with her side’s efforts.

“I’m really pleased again today with the performance and the three points,” Bompastor said. “I knew when I was coming to Chelsea that I was going to manage a squad with a lot of talent and a club with a lot of ambitions.”

The victory saw Bompastor become the first Barclays Women’s Super League boss to win their first four away matches. The Frenchwoman is pleased with how her side are taking instructions onboard and putting them into practice.

She said “For me, the main job is to make sure the players really understand the way we want to play together and what I expect from them. At the moment, with the good results, they just have a lot of confidence. It’s good they can show themselves on the field.”

Given their past defeats on Merseyside, Chelsea knew that Liverpool is a very difficult place to go. Bompastor was particularly impressed with how her side dealt with set plays, something which is seen as one of Liverpool’s biggest strengths.

She said “We knew before the game that it would be a tough game. We had to have a great performance if we wanted to have a good result.

“We’re focused on set-pieces because we knew it was one of their strengths. We did well and we maintained a clean sheet in the game. We conceded some corners and free-kicks, but we were really strong defensively and that’s part of our mentality; making things hard for the opposition.”

After recording six consecutive league wins, Chelsea look unstoppable but Bompastor says that her side are not getting carried away and that nothing is won yet.

“I think it’s a new era,” she said. “We are in a different dynamic from last season and I think it’s always good to focus on ourselves.

“It has been a perfect start for us in terms of results, points and also performances, but we haven’t won anything yet. We need to keep a good balance between confidence, which is important for the players, but also we need to keep our heads on our shoulders and be in-line with reality. That’s my job to make sure I maintain that balance.”

Chelsea are next in action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Celtic for a UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage fixture.
