Harvey Elliott has backed 'unbelievable' England under-21 boss Lee Carsley to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager.

The Liverpool midfielder has shone under Carsley's tutelage with the under-21 side, winning the European Championships back in 2023.

Since the under-21 Euros, Elliott has been particularly impressive under Carsley, scoring seven times and registering four assists in his last six outings with the Three Lions.

However, despite dazzling at Liverpool and within England's youth setup, Elliott is yet to earn a senior appearance for the national team.

Carsley's potential appointment could change that and the former Everton player is among the front-runners for the job following Southgate's decision to step aside after Euro 2024.

HARVEY ELLIOTT BACKS LEE CARSLEY FOR ENGLAND

Southgate was hired as England boss eight years ago and was also appointed following a spell with the under-21 side, with Elliott backing Carsley to have a similar impact with the senior squad should he be promoted.

Asked whether he thought Carsley could succeed with England's first-team, Elliott replied (as per the Daily Mail): "Absolutely. Lee is an unbelievable manager and an unbelievable guy. He is ready to step up. There have been a lot of big clubs sniffing around him and that is credit to himself and his coaching.

"Whenever I step on the pitch for England I just have freedom to enjoy my football. I feel like he is ready. They are conversations for them [at the FA]."

Speaking about his own England future, Elliott admitted that he's been disappointed by the fact he's still yet to make his senior debut.

"Of course I want to be there [England's senior squad]," he continued.

"But they have their certain ways and their players that they monitor and that they want to pick and that’s just what they do.

"At the same time I was disappointed, I had a nice break. The summer before I had the Euros with the 21s so I didn’t get a long break.

"So it was nice for me to unwind, see family and get my head down for this pre-season. With the new [manager] I wanted to be fresh and ready to go."

Elliott finished last season with four goals and 11 assists in all competitions and should be a perfect fit for Arne Slot's tactical setup for the 2024/25 campaign.
