Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks has backed Kyle Walker‑Peters to follow him into the first‑team squad.

Right-back Walker-Peters has said he is ready to step-up after Kyle Walker left Spurs for Manchester City for £50million two weeks ago.

Walker-Peters, who won the Under‑20 World Cup with England in June, is yet to play a competitive match for Spurs but started the two friendlies against PSG and Roma in the International Champions Cup in the USA.

The 20-year-old is line to play some part against Manchester City tomorrow and having been used at left-back against Roma could even be on the same flank as right-back Walker in the friendly in Nashville.

Winks, who forced his way into the first team in last year’s pre‑season, has backed Walker-Peters to grab his chance.

“Walker-Peters is a top player. I’ve worked with him and played with him since I was 17,” said Winks. “I know what he’s about and his strengths and weaknesses. He’s technically very good. He’s quick, he’s intelligent and reads the game well.

“He’s been with the boys for the last year or so so he knows what first team football is about. Hopefully if he keeps improving and working hard he’ll get an opportunity.

“There’s always pressure to impress and do well. I know Kyle personally. I don’t think he’ll let it get into his head and get nervous because of it. He’s someone who will just take it in his stride and continue to improve if he keeps doing that.”
