Yahoo Sports Harry and Meghan have just announced their Archewell foundation's first major project
Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left our shores for sunny California, we've been wondering what they'll devote their time (and sizeable influence) to, now that they're no longer senior working royals.
First came news of their megabucks deal with Netflix, then a podcast with Spotify, and now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced their first major charitable project.
They've spent the past ten months working on their not-for-profit foundation, Archewell - inspired by their young son Archie Harrison and the Greek word 'Arche', meaning 'source of action' - and have just revealed details of its first initiative.
Yesterday a spokesperson for Archewell confirmed that the dynamic duo have set up a philanthropic partnership with food charity World Central Kitchen, which was founded by celebrity chef José Andrés.
The spokesperson confirmed to Bazaar.com that the funding would enable the charity to construct four Community Relief Centres around the world. These buildings will act as 'service kitchens' providing meals to those who need them during crises such as natural disasters and, erm, pandemics. Work is already underway on the first of these centres, in the Caribbean country of Dominica, which was hit by two hurricanes in 2017.
In an email statement, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex told the publication, "The health of our communities depends on our ability to connect to our shared humanity. When we think about Chef Andrés and his incredible team at World Central Kitchen, we're reminded that even during a year of unimaginable hardship, there are so many amazing people willing -and working tirelessly - to support each other."
Though this is their foundation's first official partnership, the charitable pair have been pictured out and about providing relief for those hit hardest by COVID-19 throughout the pandemic. In 2018, Meghan also volunteered at the Hubb Community Kitchen in London, which was established after the Grenfell fire.
