Harnarayan Singh makes history on Hockey Night In Canada

History made Wednesday on Hockey Night In Canada during the game between the host Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs. The Flames shutout the Leafs 3-0, but making his debut during the game was HNIC host Harnarayan Singh, who became the first Sikh to broadcast a game in English.

Singh is already a widely popular NHL play-by-play man in the South Asian community thanks to his Hockey Night in Canada – Punjabi broadcasts, which he has been doing for the past nine season.

He also shot to fame during last season’s playoffs when his call of Nick Bonino’s game-winning goal in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final went viral.

It became so popular that the eventual Stanley Cup champion Penguins invited Singh to their parade so he could re-create the call.

A life-long hockey fan, Singh has been instrumental to opening up the game to the South East Asian Community. He says, hockey has the ability to “bring people together” regardless of their ethnicity.
