Hansi Flick’s dominance over Borussia Dortmund gives Barcelona hope ahead of UCL tie
Barcelona will face Borussia Dortmund this week in what will be an extremely personal match for a certain Hansi Flick.
The German coach is returning to his homeland to face Dortmund, a team he has previously encountered multiple times while managing Bayern Munich.
In fact, his record against Dortmund is perfect, as he won all five encounters during his time at Bayern, making him unbeaten against them.
The undefeated Flick
Flick took charge of Bayern Munich on November 3, 2019, and within just a few days, he had his first match against Dortmund.
That match marked his Bundesliga debut, where he led Bayern to an impressive 4-0 victory over Lucien Favre’s Dortmund.
This victory set the tone for his successful run against the German side. Throughout his time at Bayern, Flick faced Dortmund five times, winning every single encounter, and outscoring them 15 goals to six.
The scorers
During these matches, Bayern’s attacking strength was evident. Robert Lewandowski was a standout, scoring six goals across these games.
Other notable scorers included Joshua Kimmich, Serge Gnabry, Thomas Muller, Corentin Tolisso, David Alaba, Leroy Sane, Leon Goretzka, and even Mats Hummels, who scored an own goal.
Dortmund’s key players, including Erling Haaland, Julian Brandt, and Marco Reus, managed to score a few goals but were unable to stop Bayern’s dominance.
A look at the results
The first match between the two sides in Flick’s tenure ended in a commanding 4-0 win for Bayern, with Lewandowski scoring twice.
In May 2020, Bayern won again, this time 1-0, followed by a tight 3-2 victory in September. The trend continued with another 3-2 win in November, and in March 2021, Bayern completed the sweep with a 4-2 win.
Now, as Barcelona’s manager, Flick will aim to carry this winning mentality into a new challenge, but facing Dortmund will undoubtedly bring back memories of his successful days in the Bundesliga.
