Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has provided an insight into just how difficult a call it was to make Wojciech Szczęsny his new no.1 over Iñaki Peña.

The subject of the situation between the posts has of course taken its place front and centre in the chatter surrounding Barcelona for several weeks now.

This comes after the aforementioned Flick, somewhat out of the blue, opted to shake things up in the Blaugrana’s goalkeeper pecking order.

After free agent signing Szczęsny was forced to watch on from the bench for several months, he was afforded the chance to impress for the first time earlier this month.

And, since, the Pole has featured from the off in five of Barca’s seven outings across all competitions.

This includes, notably, this past weekend, when Szczęsny was favoured over Peña for the first time in a La Liga fixture.

Speaking to the media in his latest pre-match press conference on Tuesday, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of the situation between the posts in his squad at present was put to Hansi Flick once more.

And the German tactician went on to admit:

“Choosing Szczęsny? Of course it was a difficult decision because the goalkeeper position is a special position. So, yes, I would say it was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made.”
