Hank Fraley not expected to join Bears coaching staff
The Chicago Bears officially introduced Ben Johnson as their new head coach, and the attention has shifted to Johnson building his coaching staff.
There have been several reports indicating the Bears are zeroing in on Dennis Allen as defensive coordinator and are eyeing Darren Rizzi for special teams coordinator (follow along with our rumors tracker). And there was also a belief that Detroit Lions offensive line coach Hank Fraley would follow Johnson to Chicago. Although, that now seems unlikely.
According to the Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs, the Bears aren't expected to be a landing spot for Fraley, as Johnson isn't looking to raid Dan Campbell's coaching staff. Although Biggs didn't rule out another Lions assistant potentially joining Johnson in Chicago.
Does not sound like Bears will be a destination for Lions OL coach Hank Fraley. Perhaps Ben Johnson does get an assistant from Detroit to join him but Fraley is not expected. Johnson isn’t going to raid Dan Campbell’s staff.
Would expect Ben Johnson to have a well thought out plan to find assistants to work with the linemen - and he acknowledged there is work to do in the trenches.
For what's worth, Fraley has interviewed for the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator vacancy, where he would likely get an opportunity to call plays. That wouldn't happen in Chicago if he joined Johnson as his offensive coordinator.
Johnson stressed the importance of his offensive coordinator hire, especially when it comes to helping him as a play-calling head coach.
"I've seen the potential pitfalls that can arise when you’re coaching the entire football team," Johnson said.
