Ian Wright has praised Cole Palmer for his impact from the bench against the Netherlands on Wednesday night saying the Dutch defenders had an “easy ride” until he came on.

Palmer has had to bide his time for his opportunity in Germany, but after being overlooked for the first two group games he’s been involved in every game since from the bench.

The 22-year-old was introduced along with Ollie Watkins with just ten minutes remaining and the game seemingly heading for extra time, but in the last minute he played a brilliant pass into Watkins who turned Stefan de Vrij and fired a brilliant shot into the back of the net to send England into Sunday’s final against Spain.

Palmer is now just one game away from finishing an incredible season as a Euros winner and will likely have a key role to play from the bench in the final as England look to end their 58-year wait for a trophy.

It’s been quite the rise for Palmer who hadn’t even played for England until last November and he’s now set to appear in a final in his first major tournament for the Three Lions.

Speaking after the game former England international Wright was full of praise for Palmer and the impact he had.

“You want Cole Palmer to come on and hit a pass that is perfect,” he said.

“In the moment, get back to the basics, it was absolutely perfect.

“Nobody did that to those defenders all night, they had an easy ride until he came on.”
