Guardians manager Terry Francona undergoing precautionary testing at hospital

Cleveland Guardians manager Terry Francona was not feeling well before Tuesday night's game against the Royals and is not with the team as he undergoes precautionary testing at a hospital in Kansas City.

Francona was taken to The University of Kansas Health Systems to be evaluated “out of an abundance of caution” given his medical history, the team said. A team spokesman said after the game, a 2-1 Guardians win, that Francona was still at the hospital being evaluated and would remain there overnight for observation.

The team said there would be no further updates until Wednesday.

It's the first noted health situation for Francona since his 2020 and 2021 seasons as manager were cut short due to a myriad of issues.

In 2020, he dealt with gastrointestinal issues and a blood-clotting situation that put him in the Intensive Care Unit. In 2021, he stepped away from the team near the trade deadline to undergo multiple needed surgeries (hip, toe) in an effort to be ready for spring training in 2022.

Francona made it through the 2022 season without any major issues. He noted in July of 2021 that part of the reason he felt he needed to step away was due to his belief that he had reached the point where he was doing a disservice to the club by trying to grind through the pain.

Following the team's exit from the 2022 playoffs, Francona announced that he planned to return in 2023. It was also noted then, by Chris Antonetti and Mike Chernoff, that Francona was welcome to manage the club, and they'd effectively take it year-by-year.

In 2020, first base and catcher's coach Sandy Alomar Jr. took over managerial duties for Francona. In 2021, bench coach DeMarlo Hale finished the season as manager. And because he did return in 2022, those wins and losses were added to Francona's managerial record. Hale served as the Guardians' manager for Tuesday's game.

Hale said Francona called him into his office about 15 minutes before the game and told him he wasn’t feeling well.
