Grayson Murray's parents receive 2024 Sony Open check in special ceremony at Waialae
One year after he won the Sony Open in Hawaii, Grayson Murray's family accepted the oversized winner's check from his 2024 victory.
During a special moment Saturday at Waialae Country Club, Murray’s family was gifted the presentation check that was left behind by Grayson last year.
Grayon's father Eric mentioned during the presentation Saturday he has all the big tournament checks Grayson won, but the Sony Open was the only one missing. Grayson's mother Terry was also there, as were other family members.
Murray's 2024 Sony Open win came on the first playoff hole, and it marked his first PGA Tour win in six years, five months and 22 days. In May, about four months after his Sony win, Murray was found dead at his residence in Florida. His family later confirmed by a statement issued through the PGA Tour that the 30-year-old's death came by suicide.
At the start of the 2025 Sony Open week, Grayson's parents announced the launch of the Grayson Murray Foundation in their son's honor.
“Grayson touched the hearts of so many by sharing his own mental health challenges,” Eric and Terry Murray said in a release. “He utilized his platform as a multi-time champion on the PGA Tour to reach and inspire those in need, and we are determined to continue his generosity and unwavering commitment to help make a difference in the lives of others.”
