Gone Camping 2024: Red Deer Rebels
WHL training camps came and went over the weekend, and Red Deer finalized theirs with a major scrimmage at the Peavey Mart Centrium on Tuesday night.
"It was a hard one, for sure." Head Coach Dave Struch said in post game interview, summarizing the camp. "I feel really good about the way the players responded to it. The way we practiced was (probably) the hardest stuff that these guys have done, especially this early in the year and we hope that the way we did it pays off for us."
Struch continued, on the presence of the rookies. "I think for the most part tonight, it was a real good show. Our young guys who played, played really good hockey and weren't shying away, they competed hard, and they stayed engaged."
Looking ahead to preseason, a portion of the players will not be available due to NHL camps, but a few stood out and made their cases for to be impact players in the regular season.
D Quentin Bourne (2006)- Played very calm hockey, rarely forced a pass, and showed veteran poise on the blue line.
F Matthew Gard (2007)- Entering his draft year, Gard looks to increase his stock over the course of the season. The young forward was engaged, breaking up plays, and had a few good scoring chances.
F Ollie Josephson (2006)- The Seattle Kraken prospect wasted no time getting back into the swing of things, being an aggressive presence on the penalty kill as will as showcasing his playmaking ability.
G Chase Wutzke (2006)- Last but not least, Wutzke faced upwards of 20 shots in his half of the game and seemed quite collected in doing so. Part of the winning side, taking a 2-1 victory.
Red Deer opens their preseason on September 7th, where they head to Lethbridge to take on the Hurricanes.
